JEREMY LIN
FROM UNKNOWN TO KNOWN TO ALL
By Roger Dean
If you follow professional basketball in the USA you』ve
certainly heard the great story about Jeremy Lin. If you don』t follow
basketball I』m sure you probably still heard of him.
What a great story. A young man from a college ( Harvard ) -
that』s known more for producing U.S.
Presidents, Supreme Court Justices and technology billionaires than basketball
stars – is now the hottest name in professional basketball.
It』s the kind of story that touches all of us. It』s like
Rocky for real. Why does his story grab our attention?
Obviously Lin』s a smart guy – graduating from Harvard. But,
there are lots of guys that graduate from Harvard. But, there』s not a lot of
guys from Harvard that ever played in the National Basketball League ( only 3
other players in the history of basketball before Lin ever played in the NBA ).
But this story is even bigger than that, bigger than Harvard. This story
touches us because he』s a young guy with lots of basketball talent that no one
had heard of, was playing for very little money in the D-League ( D is for
development ) just a month ago. He was cut from 2 other teams in the past 2
months ! It looked like he would just have to use that Harvard degree and get a
job.
But, Lin didn』t want to do that. He knew he could play in
the NBA. While passing up job offers he kept after his dream, sleeping on his
brothers couch and not even having a place of his own to live. All he needed
was the chance to prove himself.
He finally got his chance in New York. The biggest stage in entertainment
and fame ! He didn』t disappoint anyone. His natural talent, his joy and flair
for the game was a breath of fresh air to a game and league that started the
season late because of labor troubles between owners and players. It was a
breath of fresh for a crowd that had become bored of the current stars playing
– like Kobe or
LeBron. Lin brought a new face to the game and a story that is uniquely an
American one.
In keeping with the tradition of many American success
stories Jeremy Lin was an underdog but his diligence and love of the game
focused him to the top of his game and when presented with the opportunity he
seized it and ran to the top of the charts. His low key personality and
graciousness with the spotlight on him makes him even more endearing as an
American hero.
The son of immigrants from Taiwan Jeremy Lin has captured
the imagination of a people hungry for a bright spot in a country that has
struggled the past 5 years. A city, New
York, has been rejuvenated by his stellar playing and
skills – most notably on Friday February 10th when he scored 38
points and nearly single handedly led them to their 4th straight
victory over the highly paid Los Angeles Lakers and perennial All Star Kobe
Bryant.
The night before the game Kobe Bryant was asked what he
thought of Lin』s play and he said 「 who?」. After the game the following night
Kobe Bryant was again asked what he thought of Lin』s play and he said 「
everybody knows who he is now」! Bryant continued to praise Lin』s talent and
said 「 he obviously is talented and someone finally noticed」.
While most if not all Chinese rejoice in seeing their own
reach the pinnacle of success now that Yao Ming has retired – an entire nation
of Americans who are basketball fans are all caught up in 「LINSANITY」.
As a basketball fan myself I am thrilled of a new star
rising in the sky of the NBA. It』s nice change from hearing only about Kobe and LeBron, and from
all the looks of it – it couldn』t have happened to a more nicer and gracious
guy.
Congratulations Jeremy Lin. You』re a star!
