同意!"oriental"被正式例為offensive詞大約在12-13年前吧,記得當時還和二位台灣朋友議論過,說咱自己並沒意識到被冒犯了,不過從此之後便注意這個詞了.

- 用negro一詞不算侮辱，侮辱黑人的是Nigger一詞(注意是兩個g，niger又沒事了），絕對不能講。negro一詞在 Martin Luther King, Jr. 1963年的「I Have a Dream」中就用來描述自己這個種族--一共用了15處！就連2010年的美國人口統計也有Negro一檔：

- Nothing wrong with Oriental or Chinaman - most important thing is how you behave in front of other people. We call European whiteman, round eye man, white ghost all the time, but they behave like gentleman.

- there are quite a few english words that are derogative due to history. i am kinda surprised that 老地雷 did not know it before?! (I thought 老地雷-you are a 老US and should know it long time ago :-).

one story: in 2002, Yu Minghong went to Princeton Univ to deliver a public speech. A student asked him whether he knew oriental is a derogative word. Yu answered, "I don't know". Yu was an English professor (lecturer?) in Beijing Univ (Beida) before he founded New Oriental school.
that said, after some many years, some derogative words such as oriental and nigero are not that strong. however, the rule is (my american colleague told me):
you can use them to call yourself but you should not use them to call others.
for example, if you are black, you can say, "we nigeros ... ", but if you are not black, you should not use "nigeros" to refer to african american people.
