- no, waters shoes are used to protect your feet or toes from sharp objects underneath of water. the soles of those shoes should be relatively soft (so that you feet could still sense the bottom of water) but strong enough against hard, or sharp, or thorny objects...

you as a fishery biologist, those shoes should be your standard equipment for walking in shallow water...
i had one pair (cheap) before and lost one of them in a muddy river....
