"For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?"

I think in this verse the Bible teaches us what is the real life we should keep and what is not the real life we should not pursue with our heart.

To forfeit soul means to give up the real life or abandon it. Even we can gain a whole world, there is no profit to our life, not saying we can never gain it as whole.

Be of heed for any material things' pursuing effort.
