Chinese car makers will invade the Australia market in greater numbers than expected in 2009, with Great Wall Motors expected to join the Chery brand already confirmed for a local launch. A second Chinese car maker looks set for sale in Australia, bringing a new level of price competitiveness to the entry-level end of the market once dominated by Korean brands such as Hyundai, Daewoo and Kia. Great Wall Motors is expected to become the second Chinese brand to launch in Australia in 2009, putting further pressure on the entry-level end of the new-car market.

As previously reported by Drive, Great Wall was testing vehicles in Australia in early 2008. Drive sources say the Great Wall brand could be on sale within 12 months, selling alongside Chery, another Chinese brand to be imported by Ateco Automotive.

With a dominant showing at the recent Beijing motor show, Great Wall Motors (GWM) has a range of vehicles, including hatchbacks, four-wheel-drives and people movers. However, it』s the light commercial vehicles – including a range of utes – where Great Wall is strongest and where Australian interest is believed to lie.

Great Wall claims to be China』s 「largest maker of SUVs and pick-up trucks」. It』s not known whether Great Wall Motors vehicles sold here would be called GWM or Great Wall. Drive.com.au understands Great Wall would also be distributed by Ateco and that negotiations are in place to set up a network of dealers.

Ateco spokesman Edward Rowe refused to comment on whether Ateco was talking to the Great Wall brand. 「Ateco is speaking to a number of companies in China but the only one with which we have concluded a distribution agreement is Chery,」 says Rowe. 「Discussions with other companies are ongoing.」 As part of global moves to sell affordable Chinese cars, Great Wall recently began exporting small numbers of vehicles to Africa and Russia. Great Wall Motors already has established distribution networks in 81 countries and claims its vehicles 「have run on the roads of 121 countries」.

A press release the company sent out in May, 2008 states Great Wall』s desire to expand its export markets. Great Wall exported 51,394 cars in 2007 and has experienced export growth of 90 per cent since 1998. 「We hope to export 80,000 vehicles this year (2008), with overseas markets accounting for half of our sales next year (2009),」 says Wang Fengying, the female CEO of Great Wall Motors.

While most of its vehicles are built in China, Great Wall also assembles vehicles in at least six other countries including, most recently, Indonesia. The imminent move to sell Great Wall vehicles in Australia means there will be at least two Chinese brands on sale here by the end of 2009. Ateco recently confirmed it would import Chery vehicles to Australia early in 2009.

In confirming Chery was coming to Australia Ateco』s managing director Ric Hull admitted there was a lot of work to be done to change the perception of Chinese vehicles.「Obviously, the current perception of Chinese cars is that they will be cheap and sub-standard but we're confident we can turn that around,」 said Hull in March, 2008

Great Wall』s CEO agrees there is a big task ahead when it comes to the branding of Chinese vehicles. 「Although we can provide high-quality products with competitive prices, in the fierce international competition, branding is vital for a company』s long-term development,」 says Fengying. 「GWM is making efforts to change the international impression of low-quality, low-price Chinese vehicles.」

Kia and Hyundai are still struggling to break out of the cheap-and-cheerful mould that once defined the brands. Fellow Korean brand Daewoo – now part of the General Motors family – was discontinued locally with many of the vehicles now sold as Holdens.
