Where could we use a metro rail line?
Investigations have been made into where a metro rail system could best serve Sydney. Due to the significant growth in Sydney's North West, the highest priority metro is the North West Metro, linking Rouse Hill to Sydney's CBD.
The NSW Government has identified two further possible routes as the next priorities for Metro. They are West Metro, running between Parramatta and the CBD and South East Metro extending from the CBD to Maroubra and Malabar. Beyond these two routes, options exist to further expand the Metro network.
The Parramatta - CBD corridor is already Sydney's busiest transport corridor, accounting for 9.26 million passenger kilometres of daily travel. Both road and rail between Parramatta and the City currently operate at capacity.
A metro in this corridor would reduce the current rail and road burden and open up exciting possibilities for precincts including Sydney Olympic Park, the University of Sydney, Leichhardt and the Inner West. It could also provide key linkages for existing CityRail stations, bus interchanges and light rail.
A South East Metro would revitalise transport in Sydney's south eastern suburbs, providing a quick, efficient link between the City, the University of NSW, Kensington, Maroubra and Malabar.
The Ministry of Transport's Centre for Transport Planning and Product Development will review these two metro options in conjunction with other NSW Government agencies.
