以下是美Z中常用的口Z。在此整理列出,K稍加解,希望您在日常生活中,也能派上用觥

(1) to pick up the pieces:意思是O法a心理或感情上的M正常生活。 (emotionally put one's life back together) 例如:

Since her divorce, she has picked up the pieces. (自x婚以恚a感情正常生活。)
After his girlfriend left him, he is picking up the pieces (of his broken heart) . (他女友z他之後,他正在a破碎的心。)
Some people feel that Taiwan should pick up the pieces and achieve political and economical stability. (有人J樘重整旗鼓,F政治和姆定。)
但也可以指真正的拾起S多的碎片。 (要看上下文的意思而定) 例如:

He picked up the pieces after he broke the glass. (他打破玻璃後,拾起碎片。)

(2)  to run around in circles:意思是瞎忙或空忙一而]有什NY果 (act very busy but not accomplish anything) 例如:

Mr. A always tends to run around in circles. (A先生常有瞎忙一的A向。)
The parents told their children to stay focused and not run around in circles. (父母告V孩子要遠耍豢上姑σ魂。)
(to stay focused=to stay in focus=to keep the goal or a result in mind)
After his retirement he will try not to run around in circles. (他退休後,不要做]有目說南姑Α)
如果只是「to run around」,t是指c人交往或到[玩。例如:

Don't run around with a bad crowd. (不要c娜槲欏)
They have been running around together for some- time. (他交往已有些r候了。)


(3) to open a can of worms:照字面碚f,如果打_一罐蠕x,全部x子就教優佬校肟刂疲剎蝗菀住R於裕褪竊黽勇砑永щy或u造更多的}。 (to add more difficulties;have more troubles or create more problems) 例如:

Don't open a can of worms by discussing this touchy issue. (不要@敏感}而增加麻)
When Mr. A asked about wages, he really opened a can of worms. (A先生到工Yr,反而增加更多}。)
Mr. Chen has opened a can of worms because of his controversial belief. (因殛先生具性的信念,使他添加S多}。)
有r也可真正表示「打_一罐蠕x」,如蚯蚓:

While fishing, he usually opens a can of worms. (他~r,通常都要打_一罐蠕x。)


(4) to fill (one's) shoes:意思是替代某人的位或檳橙斯ぷ (to take someone's place or do someone's job) 例如:

I will fill his shoes while he is on vacation. (他休假r,我要代理他的工作。)
When he retires, his son will fill his shoes. (他退休後,他鶴⑻媧穆位。) 或
He will set out to fill his father's shoes. (set out = to try or begin)
(set 的釉~rB = set, set,setting)
也有人用:to set out a pair of shoes for (someone) to fill,意思也是任命某人文撤N位。例如:

Mr. Bush set out a (big) pair of shoes for Mr. Powell to fill as Secretary of State. (布希先生任命Powell先生漲淶鬧厝巍)
Mr. Wang has set out a pair of shoes for his son to fill as Minister of Education. (王先生他的鶴謂逃塊L。)

(5) to scratch (one's) head:意思是搔^,表示}或事情的迷惑或殯y,不知如何答覆或恫藕謾 (puzzle about something why it happened) 例如:

After the terrorist attacks in New York, many Americans have been scratching their heads. (恐怖分子在~su翎幔S多美撕茈yt解楹l生。)
You may have to scratch your head after working on this project. (你事@後,也S岩槭顫N要@N做。) 也就是:
You wonder why you started this project.
His strange action made me scratch my head. (他的奇怪行恿釵屹M解他的C)
My student was scratching his head over my question. (我的W生抓耳先恢綰位卮鷂業})
但是也可以指真正的抓^皮:例如:

Dandruff makes Mr. Lee scratch his head all the time. (^皮W使李先生常常抓^)

(6) to have a black cloud hanging over (one's) head(s):是指^去的某N闌蛩齙膩e事或傻事,一直在XH中P旋 (to have certain trouble following you around; did something bad or foolish in the past ) 例如:

Some people have a black cloud hanging over their heads. (一些人ψ約哼^去所做的e事,y以忘選)
We all should try to avoid having a black cloud hanging over our heads. (我都要避免做e事,免得砉⒐㈧選)
(]:即使做了S多e事或傻事,black 前面也不用 many 或 several,而且 cloud 後面也不加 s。把它集合起恚橐妒隆)
(7) to get the short end of the stick:意思是受到不公平的待遇或被人不重 (being treated unfairly)。例如:

Sometimes nice people get the short end of the stick. (有r好人反而受到不公平的待遇。)
Getting the short end of the stick will make people mad. (人不喜g被人p或受到不平的待遇。)
Be careful what you say;you don't want to get the short end of the stick. (你要小心f;不要人p。)
(注意:]有「long end of the stick」的f法)

(8) to get (way) out of hand:意思是y以控制的情形;不或不守o律 (to be out of control;difficult to control some situation)。例如:

The fight between two young men has gotten out of hand. (擅貽p人打架,已到了y以控制的地步。)
This child usually gets (way) out of hand. (@孩子通常很不。)
(way = really,只是加Z猓話愣際∪ァ)
We will stop this debate before it gets (way) out of hand. (我要停止@鮫q,免得到了y以控制的地步。)
His wife's holiday shopping will get way out of hand. (他太太喜g在假期錚攪o法控制的地步。)
(即超出A算,yI|西。)
]:有r釉~不用get,也用「verb to be」。例如:

The situation is out of hand. (局面o法控制。)

(9) to vent (one's) spleen on (someone):意思是向某人l脾猓to get mad at someone)(spleen 本意就是鈉飠蚺) 例如:

In my opinion children should be taught not to vent their spleens on others. (我J橐Ш⒆硬灰e人l脾狻)
She vents her spleen on her husband all the time. (她老拿她老公出狻)
Venting your spleen on your wife may make you look bad. (μl脾鼓悴緩每礎)
As a professor he was not supposed to vent his spleen on his students. (做橐晃喚淌冢輝λW生l脾狻)

(10) to rule the roost:意思是家作主,支配一切 (to control the house or to be in charge of anything.) (roost 本意是u棚; to rule = to control;多半用在家庭,指 house or husband)所以有:「The rooster rule the henhouse」的f法。(公u在u棚e家作主。)(henhouse 本是指母u的u棚) 例句:

In most cases, the husband rules the roost. (一般而言,老公是家作主。)
Do housewives rule the roost? (家庭主D能否家作主呢?)
有r也可用於Vx方面:(can be used in broad sense)例如:

The baseball team ruled the roost last year. =They won the game.
The boss failed to rule the roost. = He failed to take charge. (疏於守)

(11) to get a life:意思是不要整天花太多的rg在一件事情上,也要做些其他的事情,^著正常的生活 (Don't spend so much time in doing one thing.)
(多半是批u^去某N行椋簿褪沁^去的生活不正常,F在需要一正常的日子,所以也有「get some life in your life」的f法。) 例句:

Don't go to movie every night;get a life.(不要每天晚上去看影;也可做些其他事情,^正常的生活。)
Since the boy works on computer everyday, his parents told him to get a life. (@孩子整天搞X,他父母叫他做些其他事,^正常的日子。)
I told him,「Stop doing what you are doing and get a life.」(我告V他不要再做F在所做的事,^正常的生活。)
Now that you are divorced, I hope you can get a life. (既然你x了婚,我希望你能^正常的日子。)  
(12) to climb the ladder of success:意思是陞官l (get a promotion or make a lot of money)。例如:

Many young people are trying to climb the ladder of success. (S多年p人都想陞官l。)
Climbing the ladder of success has always been Mr. Chen's main goal. (陞官l一直是先生的最大目恕)
He feels he has no hope of climbing the ladder of success. (他X得他]有陞官l的希望。)

(13) to start the ball rolling:意思是_始某N活踴蜷_始某件事情的第一步 (first step to begin something)。例如:

In collecting the money for charity, Mr. A has started the ball rolling. (櫬壬頗伎罟ぷ鰨A先生已_始第一步。)
Gentlemen, perhaps I should start the ball rolling. (T位先生,或S由我黹_^。)
As to diversity at our school, Mr. B is starting the ball rolling. (P於本校多元化,B先生著手第一步。)
Many Chinese officials try hard to start the ball rolling for climbing the ladder of success. (S多中TM力O法_始陞官l。)

(14) to keep a stiff upper lip:意思是面щy或危U而能表F遠ǔ林 (In case of difficulty, be strong or keep your pride) (stiff 是形容~,意思是硬的,B的)
(lip 只用) 例如:

In case of emergency, don't be afraid; just keep a stiff upper lip. (遇到o急事件,不要怕;要保持遠ǔ林)
During the surgery, he needs to keep a stiff upper lip. (郵中gr,他必要些。) (need to be brave)
Children should be taught how to keep a stiff upper lip when necessary. (教孩子如何在必要r保持遠ǔ林)

(15) to spare no effort:意思是M所有的力量(即不zN力)或用一切方法 (try all efforts or try all means) 例如:

I will spare no effort to accomplish this project. (我盟辛α客瓿蛇@。)
China will spare no (diplomatic) effort to prevent Mr. Chen from being granted political asylum. (中⒈M一切外交方式,阻止先生取得政治庇o。)
Our school has spared no effort on facilities and staff. (本校在充O浜腿T方面,不zN力。)
Mr. Wang has spared no effort in convincing his girlfriend to marry him. (王先生用一切方法f服女友嫁o他。)

(16) to knock (one) off (one's) feet:意思是音十分亮或δ橙擻瀉艽蟮惱鷙 (very loud voice; also can mean anything with powerful effect on someone)例如:

When I tested the smoke alarm, the sound nearly knocked me off my feet.(我用防火警篤r,音大得使我震印)
Mrs. Lee's singing knocked me off my feet. (李太太的歌,亮得令我震印)
The powerful wind will knock him off his feet. (烈的L乎震鈾)
At many Chinese restaurants in Taiwan, the sound of people talking almost knocks you off your feet. (台車腦S多中宛^,人f音之大,你震@。)

(17) to go over the edge:意思是走O端,甚至走向狂或精神ey的地步。(go too far or go extreme; even heading into the direction of craziness) 例如:

I feel X-games go over the edge. (我J槊半U的[蚴親呱狹O端。) ( X-game = extreme gam e= risky game)
After her husband's death, she almost went over the edge (of sanity.)(她老公去世後,她乎精神ey。) (= ost her mind)
Reach out to others, so you will not go over the edge. (多P心和助他人,你就不齔齷奶剖慮欏)
Many people agree that the terrorist attacks have gone over the edge. (S多人同意恐怖分子的攻羰親呱狹O端c狂。)
(18) to give (someone) the third degree:意思是榱四臣慮槎o某人S多的或逼供(a lot of tough questions or interrogation)例如:

As the daughter did not want her father to remarry, she gave him the third degree. (由於女翰灰習衷倩椋o他S多|。)
The police will give Mr. A the third degree if he continues to act strangely.(假如他的行輿是怪怪的,警察乒┧#
The parents suspected their son's drug use; they gave him the third degree.(父母岩鶴游荊他S多}。)
m然也可用被誘ZB

Mr. A will be given the third degree if he behaves suspiciously.
但F代一般人^喜g用主誘ZB。

(19) to be no end to it:意思是^m不啵]完]了,或]有Y果 (will continue indefinitely) (通常都以l件句_始) 例如:

If your wife continues her shopping frenzy there may be no end to it. (假如你太太^m她狂岬褓蒼S]完]了。)
(it 是指 shopping frenzy)
If we don't stop terrorism, there will be no end to it. (如果我不K止恐怖主x,那N^m不唷)
= We must stop terrorism, or it will continue indefinitely. (it 是指 terrorism)
If we give him whatever he demands, there will be no end to it. (假如我他有求必屈N]完]了。)
(it 是指 demand)


(20) to stand (someone) up:意思是]有A先通知Ψ蕉Ъs,人久等。(to break an appointment without notice and keep a person waiting)例如:

Miss B was embarrassed to have been stood up by her boyfriend. (B 小姐因她的男友失s,感到y堪。)
He has never stood her up, but has been late for several dates.(他λ]有不通知而失s,但有次st到了。)

也可以f:
His date was a no-show.(或 noshow)
@e的 no-show,也是指srΨ]有出F。(did not show up physically)

注意:如果f:
There is no show tonight. (今晚]有影或)
= no movie or play. ( 但 no show 中g不加 hyphen)


(21) to be in debt up to (one's) eyeballs (或 ears): 是指劾 (in deep debt),本硎且雜斡橐綣偷攪搜矍蚧蚨洌捅硎競萇睿簿褪秦芏唷K岳賢庖渤Uf:He is swimming in debt. 例句:

He is at retirement age, but still working because he is in debt up to his eyeballs (或 ears).
(他到退休年g,但在工作,因樗劾邸)
或者f:
He is over his head in debt.
With his spending habit, he has been in debt up to his ears (或 eyeballs).
(因他的花XT,他已劾邸)
After his divorce, Mr. A was in debt up to his eyeballs.
(A 先生x婚後,一身是)
或者f:
He was fifty thousand dollars in debt.
(他迦f元。)
但是:

I feel a special debt of gratitude to him. 又是指我λe感恩或欠他一P人情

(22) to come up short:意思是]有_到A料的目嘶蠆蚶硐 (don't meet expectation or less than ideal)。例如:

Her long-distance relationship with her boyfriend has come up short. (她c男友的LhPS是不蚶硐氳摹) (less than ideal or does not meet expectation)
His son's behavior came up short. (他鶴擁男軛H不理想。) (not as good as expected)
有r也指金X方面:

The cash register came up short when Miss A worked.(A 小姐上班管~r,收yC缺X。)
生命是一件美好的事物,好到你用什麼方式度過,都有點像浪費~
