Chinese Maoists: 「Long Live the Great Wall Street Revolution!」
News of the Occupy Wall Street protests have reached China with gusto this week, drawing a range of impassioned—if puzzled—responses across the political spectrum. The narrow band of Chinese nationalists who yearn for the days of Mao have discovered an appealing 「revolutionary spirit」 in American political life. In a piece proclaiming, 「Long Live the Great Wall Street Revolution!」 the reliably patriotic site called M4 suggests that, in a twist, the Chinese could learn something about protesting from Americans:
We should demand our government return to President Mao』s philosophy, stop privatization, and return to the true beliefs of the Communist Party. Stop practicing Marxism on the stage—with capitalism backstage. Capitalism is a dead end; there is no future for it. Fixing wrongdoings and returning to socialism is the only correct way!
One is tempted to see irony in the next sentence, but it is less a joke, I suspect, than a measure of how muddled Chinese political loyalties are these days: 「Chinese government officials, wake up!」 the nationalists add. 「Take a look at what』s happening on Wall Street! Don』t be swept into the dustbin of history by the people, just as the autumn wind blows away the falling leaves!」
Even for those who follow Chinese politics, the allegiances here can get a bit confusing. In short, these are nationalists, after all, who generally side with the government on political questions—such as whether people should be allowed to go into the streets to protest. (No, generally.) Except, in this case we』re talking about protesters who are denouncing the excesses of capitalism. Now that is a protest a Chinese patriot can get behind! Indeed, the Chinese press has been happy to wonder, as one piece put it, 「Are jasmine flowers blossoming in America?」 Or to flip over the kind of platitude usually uttered about China: 「Experts say that the Wall Street protest shows social problems in America such as the gap between the rich and the poor.」 China News has gone so far as to christen a nickname:
In history, young Americans have always been lumped into specific 「generations.」 There was 「The Lost Generation」 after the First World War, and then 「The Beat Generation」 after the Second World War. Now, will the young people coming of age after the financial crisis become 「The Occupy Generation?
Rounding out this through-the-looking-glass moment in Chinese political commentary, it fell to someone else to make the argument on behalf of the Chinese government (or, was it on behalf of capitalism?). Who better than Tencent, a listed corporation that has benefited from the free market, which bravely volunteered that 「Wall Street is definitely not 『pure evil.』」
To the proletariat, it noted, bonuses may appear enormous, but one shouldn』t blame the winners. 「As private companies, these companies decide their own payment systems. The government doesn』t have any power over them other than taxes,」 the commentary explained. 「The Wall Street culture has always been high risk associated with high return. There would be no financial empire today, if it weren』t for greed.」

關於佔領華爾街的新聞被人興高采烈地傳到了中國，並且引起了一陣熱烈的——或許還有些讓人看不大懂的各政治派別的回應。那些希望回到毛時代的一小股民族主義者在美國的政治生活中發現了一股富有吸引力的「革命精神」。在堅定的愛國主義網站M4.CN中，有一篇題為「偉大的華爾街革命萬歲」的宣言，這篇宣言令人驚奇地說，中國應該從美國人那裡學習些什麼：
「我們應該要求我們的政府重新返回到毛主席的哲學中，停止私有化，並且重返真正的共產黨信仰當中。不要再表面上執行馬克思主義，背地裡發展資本主義了。資本主義是死路一條，沒有未來。改邪歸正，返回到社會主義是唯一正確的行為。」
人們應該很容易就可以看到下面的句子中的諷刺，不過，與其說是一個笑話，還不如說忠於中國政治體制的人是多麼的漿糊。這句話說「中國的政府官員們，醒醒吧！不要被人民像秋風掃落葉一般掃進歷史的垃圾桶里！」
就算是那些一直在跟蹤中國政治的人，這裡的忠誠表態或許也會有一點讓人摸不到頭腦。簡單的說，這些人是民族主義者，而且他們基本上是在一些政治問題上與政府保持一致的——比如說，人們是否有權利在街頭開張抗議（一般來說，沒有）。不過，在這個為了譴責資本主義荒淫無度的抗議中，這些民族主義者的回答卻是一個例外。這是一個中國的愛國者支持的抗議活動啊！確實，中國的媒體也很高興地去想，正如一家媒體所說，「花花盛開美國？」，或者換成一種經常用來說中國的陳腐語調：專家稱華爾街行走凸顯美國貧富差距等社會問題。 中國新聞社走的更遠，已經開始起名字了：
「歷史上，美國年輕人總會被社會賦予「一代」的定義：從一戰後「迷失的一代」，到二戰後「垮掉的一代」，如今這金融危機后誕生出來的又將成為怎樣的「一代」，會不會是「佔領的一代」？」
在對中國的政治評論一瞥之後，我們看看為中國政府辯護（或者，是為資本主義辯護？）的聲音。在其中，還有誰比騰訊做的更好呢？它列出了一溜從自由市場中獲益的公司名單，並且自願說出「華爾街絕非『罪惡滔天』」。
騰訊說，對於無產者來說，獎金可能看上去非常高，但是一個人不能埋怨勝利者。「華爾街大發年終獎是不知羞恥嗎？很多人批評美國救市后，華爾街上的大公司們卻為高管員工們大量派發紅利。實際上，作為私企，這些公司的薪酬制度完全由自己制定，政府除了對其徵稅也不可能有其它的措施。而華爾街文化本就是高風險高回報，沒有「貪婪」恐怕也就沒有金融帝國。」
