SYDNEY (MarketWatch) — Deven Sharma will step down as president of credit-rating agency Standard & Poor』s and will be replaced by Douglas Peterson, the firm』s parent said late Monday.
Sharma will step down from his role as president on Sept. 12 and will leave the firm at the end of the year, McGraw-Hill Cos. MHP +0.30% said in a statement.
Stocks rallied in another volatile session, fueled by strength in the technology sector, as bargain-hunting investors scrounged for buying opportunities.
Peterson is currently chief operating officer of Citigroup Inc. C -0.15% unit, Citibank.
McGraw-Hill Cos. linked the leadership change to development of its organizational structure.
「As was announced at the end of last year, Standard & Poor』s was split into two separate organizations — S&, our credit ratings service, and McGraw-Hill Financial — to enable both organizations to serve investors and customers more effectively. Deven assisted us with the creation of these two high-growth segments and was then ready for new challenges. Accordingly, we began a process to identify a new leader for S&,」 the firm said.
Sharma』s departure from the firm will take place just weeks after Standard & Poor』s downgraded its U.S. government debt rating to AA+ from AAA.
Following the ratings downgrade, U.S. stocks experienced a period of intense volatility. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.34% has lost 10.6% so far this month, going by Monday』s closing level.
