The administration of the Auburn Police Division doesn』t normally
involve the Federal Bureau of Investigation in an assault case on the
Auburn University campus.
But after a young Korean man was apparently assaulted by four male
assailants because of his ethnicity just three days after a Korean
student caused the worst campus shooting in U.S. history, Capt. Jerry
Holder said APD officials have contacted the local FBI office.
Holder said investigators have yet to determine if the attack on an
18-year-old Korean student was a hate crime or not, but "it is being
taken seriously." A person close to the family, who didn』t want to be
identified for fear of retribution, is convinced otherwise.
The victim was allegedly attacked by four white males outside his room
at Lane Residence Hall shortly before midnight Thursday.
The young man thought the incident was a case of mistaken identity,
until he asked his attackers why they were beating him. According to a
member of the victim』s family, the attackers said it was because he was
Asian.
At first, the victim didn』t want to report the incident or seek
treatment, but he was convinced to get authorities involved when others
learned of the attack and saw the extent of his injuries.
The victim suffered no internal bleeding but did incur minor bruises and
swelling and cuts in his mouth from the assault. The report filed with
Auburn authorities at 1:15 a.m. Saturday listed the offense as
aggravated assault, a misdemeanor.
Holder said it』s a "definite possibility" that the attack was, in fact,
a hate crime, especially since this happened three days after Seung-Hui
Cho, a Virginia Tech student born in Korea, killed 32 people in the
worst campus shooting in U.S. history and the worst act of civilian
violence ever.
Similarly, he said, many members of the area』s Middle Eastern community
felt threatened after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
AU President Ed Richardson called it "disturbing" to hear of the assault
of a student. He said university staff members are monitoring his
recovery and helping him take steps to return to class. The victim
arrived in Auburn about a month ago to enroll in the school』s English as
a Second Language program.
"The Auburn family is stronger because it is comprised of many
nationalities and backgrounds, and an inclusive environment is a
commitment embraced across campus," Richardson said. "We are working
with the Auburn Police to investigate the incident and will support any
action to punish those involved."
The victim couldn』t identify the suspects, and there are no known
witnesses. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to
call the police at 501-3100.
"We are doing all we can with what we have," said Holder. |
