寶馬是馳名世界的汽車企業，也被認為是高檔汽車生產業的先導。寶馬公司創建於1916年，總部設在幕尼黑。80 年來，它由最初的一家飛機引擎生產廠發展成為今天以高級轎車為主導，並生產享譽全球的飛機引擎、越野車和摩托車的企業集團，名列世界汽車公司前20名。寶馬也被譯為「巴依爾」。寶馬公司的全稱是"Bayerische Motor en Werhe AG",BMW就是這三個單詞的首位字母縮寫。
寶馬作為國際汽車市場上的重要成員相當活躍，其業務遍及全世界120個國家。1997年生產各種車輛120萬輛。寶馬汽車主要有3、5、6、7系列汽車及雙座蓬頂跑車等。目前，寶馬正處於事業興盛時期：歐寶和福特汽車公司購買它的6缸柴油發動機；勞斯萊斯集團不僅採用它的12缸發動機及電子設備，還與其共同研究生產新的航空發動機；1994 年寶馬集團收購了英國陸虎汽車公司(RoverGroup)；1998年，寶馬集團又購得了勞斯萊斯汽車品牌；寶馬在美國南卡羅來那州的新廠也落成投產，這是在美國的第一家外國高檔汽車生產廠。
寶馬標誌中間的藍白相間圖案，代表藍天、白雲和旋轉不停的螺旋漿，喻示寶馬公司淵源悠久的歷史，象徵該公司過去在航空發動機技術方面的領先地位，又象徵公司一貫宗旨和目標：在廣闊的時空中，以先進的精湛技術、最新的觀念，滿足顧客的最大願望，反映了公司蓬勃向上的氣勢和日新月異的新面貌。
