1. 這是一首饒舌歌曲，有很多連讀、弱讀現象，大家一定要仔細聽了。People livin' like they ain't got no mamas這句歌詞當中有雙重否定，但是表達的意思還是否定的。這是黑人英語中常見的用法。比如說，I ain't know nothing about it. 我對這件事一無所知。其實黑人的饒舌歌曲是有一套自己的語言系統的，後面我們還會對黑人饒舌歌曲的發音規律做詳細介紹。

　　2. be addicted to sth/sb或者 be attracted to sth/sb 都可以表示「被某人或者某事吸引，對某人或者某事物上癮」。

　　3. trauma 這個詞表示「精神上的創傷，痛苦或者不幸」。比如說，She went through the traumas of divorce. 她經受了離婚的痛苦。

　　4. Crips 和 Bloods是多倫多央街史蒂爾斯東街 (Steeles Ave. E.) 和當米爾斯路 (DonMills Rd.) 一帶的二個黑社會幫派組織。KKK就不用說了，就是美國國內著名的三K黨，全名是Ku Klux Klan，是一個臭名昭著的種族主義恐怖組織，宗旨就是不擇手段地維護白人至高無上的地位。

　　5. leave space to sth的意思就是「為某事物的產生或者發展提供空間或者機會」。

　　6. discriminate這個詞在這首歌里出現了多次，表示「歧視或者偏袒某人或某些人」，用法是discriminate against sb/ in favor of sb，比如說，Society still discriminates against women. /Society still discriminates in favor of men. 社會仍然歧視女性/厚待男性。discriminate 的名詞形式是discrimination，我們可以說，This is a clear case of racial discrimination. 這顯然是種族歧視。

　　7. irate是一個形容詞，意思是「發怒的，憤怒的」，跟angry差不多，但是irate是一個比較正式的用法。

　　8. set it straight表示「改正某人的錯誤，務必讓某人了解」，也可以說成put it straight. 比如說，You'll have to set it straight since it's you who made the mistake. 既然是你做錯了，你就要去補救。


　　9. gravitate to sb/sth 這個片語表示「逐漸地，不由自主地」，比如說，When she arrived, all the men in the room gravitated to her. 她一到全屋的男人都被她吸引了。The conversation gravitated to sport. 談話的內容轉到了運動方面。

　　10. practice在這裡表示「積極從事某事物」，比如說，He was a Catholic but didn't practice his religion. 他那時是天主教徒，但並不實踐信仰。

　　11. turn the other cheek 表示「受到猛烈攻擊而不還手」，就好像耶穌說過，別人打了你的一邊臉，你就應該伸出另一邊臉也讓他打。這是一種修為。如果大家都能這麼做，這個世界也就沒有戰爭了。

　　12. get sb on sth 表示「某問題難住了某人，某人回答不上來」，比如說，You got me on that. 這可難住我了。我也不知道。

　　13. insane跟crazy 一樣，表示「不正常的，愚蠢的」。比如說，That's an insane desire. 這是瘋狂的慾望。

　　15. the youth就是指「小孩，年輕的人」。die young 表示「很年輕就死去了」，die 後面加上一個形容詞或名詞，就可以表示「死的時候處於某種狀態，具有某種身份」，比如，He died happy. 他在幸福中死去。He died a beggar. 他在乞討生活中死去。

　　16. dividend表示「股息, 紅利, 獎金」，only visions of their dividends就是指「自己的私立，利益」。這裡是說人們都是根據自己的利益來做出決定的，也就是說人類是自私的。

　　17. deny thy brother 當中的thy是古英語的用法，就是現代英語中的their。還有幾個這樣的此，大家會在聖經中經常見到，比如說，thou，就是you，thee就是they。大家平常看到了要注意積累。

　　18. 這裡的war戰爭應該是指小布希反動的對伊拉克的戰爭。the reason's undercover，The truth is kept secret, it's swept under the rug 就是說到現在為止，布希也沒有能說清楚發動這場戰爭的真正原因，真是欲加之罪，何患無辭。

　　19. 我們知道賺錢的說法是make money，那我們變化一下money-making，就成了名詞形式。

　　20. criteria這個詞表示「評判的標準或尺度」，是複數形式，它的單數形式是criterion。我們來舉幾個例子，Success in making money is not always a good criterion of success in life. 能賺錢並不是衡量人生幸福的可靠標準。這裡是在批判被政府掌握的媒體對人的思想的誤導。

　　21. animosity的意思是「仇恨, 憎惡」。

　　22. under表示「空虛」，down表示「沮喪，心情低落」。no wonder that 這個短語表示「發生什麼事情並不奇怪，難怪」，在口語中很常用，比如說，No wonder you were late! 怪不得你來得這麼晚！我們還可以說，little/small wonder that…Small wonder that he was so tired. 怪不得他這麼累。
