不定冠詞最基本的用途就是用來表示「一」這個概念

1，A stitch in time saves nine.
2, Jason is an internationally known scholar.

此外，a/an還有下列六種用途
[一]常和time, measurement 等有關名詞連用，以表示「每一」的概念

1，I teach five days a week.
2, This type of vegetables is sold at least one dollar a kilo.
3, My car usually runs sixty kilometres an hour.

[二]常和hundred, thousand, dozen以及數目，數量連用。

1，That factory turns out at least a hundred tyres a day.
2, May's monthly salary is a thousand dollars.
3, I have a number of sponsored students.
4, Kay has a lot of money.

[三] 在of/at后出現，以表示同一類概念

1，Birds of a feather flock together.
2, Please come one at a time.
3, Things of a kind of come together, so do people of a mind.

[四]常在rather, quite, many, half, what, such 等詞后出現，形成固定用法。
1，Tom is rather a fool.
2, Many a student has asked that question.
3, The visitor left half an hour ago.
4, What a find day it is!
5, How can you say such a thing!

[五]用在so, as, too, how +形容詞這些結構里
1，We have not had so hot a day before.
2, Susan is as clever a girl as Anna.
3, That is too difficult a book for beginners.
4, No one knew how serious a problem it was until later.

[六]出現在許多習慣用語中
1，Bob always has a bone to pick with others.
2, Some students turned a deaf ear to the teacher's advice.
3, All must learn a language with an eye to mastering it.
4, I hope you will make an effort to attend the meeting punctually.
5, Jason has an aversion to being idle.
6, The news of Jack's sudden resignation came as a bolt from the blue.
