If you want to pick up comic books to learn English and Culture, you will have to be selected. Some (luckily, only are few) are sold for their "shock value" and have no literary or even entertaining value. Most others, however, are written in reasonably good English, some are as good as a literary masterpiece.
Many of the comic strips on newspapers are drawn and written by college graduates. Doonesbury is very literary. Calvin and Hobbs, Non-sequiter, Hi and Lois, Adam, Fox Trot are all well written. (Fox Trot's creator, e.g., is an Amherst College physics graduate. Gerry Trudeau of Doonesbury went to Yale, I believe.) For a selection of "comic strip English", check out my collection at 漫畫上的英語:
