這支城市藍調音樂四人組有Beyonce Knowles（1981年9月4日出生於美國德克薩斯州休斯頓）、leToya Luckett（1981年3月11日出生於美國德克薩斯州休斯頓）、LaTavia Roberson（1981年11月1日出生於出生於美國德克薩斯州的休斯頓）和Kelendria Rowland（1981年2月11日出生於美國德克薩斯州休斯頓）。

　　Knowles和Roberson兩人在年僅10歲的時候就開始一起唱歌。

　　Rowland於1992年加入到這兩個人中，Luckett也在隨後的一年加入，組成了如今的四人演唱組。這個四人組合的名稱是從《聖經》是得到啟迪，取自《以賽亞書》中的一個章節。Knowles的父親是她們的經理，是他逐步把這幾個人推向了成功。她們以一種極佳的街頭形象和給人印象深刻的協調的嗓音在當地吸引了一大批追隨者，為她們的成名奠定了基礎。1997年她們與哥倫比亞唱片公司簽約，她們演唱的《Killing Time》在電影《The Men In Black》中出現使她們名聲大振。

　　2000年2月，Farrah Franklin 和 Michelle Williams加入這個演唱組接替離去的Roberson 和 Luckett。一個月後，她們以一首《Say My Name》排上了美國熱門歌曲100首的首位。儘管這個組合不斷地經歷著人員的變動--Franklin在8月份也離開了，但她們的《Jumpin, Jumpin》和《Independent Women Part 1》卻繼續在大西洋兩岸獲得成功，後者取自於電影《霹靂嬌娃》(Charlie's Angels)，這首歌在英美兩個國家都登上了排行榜的首位。
