「Some friends watched these new works and thought I still have room to develop」. Talking about this Mr. Wu put on a smile. 「I can』t stay idle. I can』t live idle. Nowadays I refuse all interviews, meetings and functions. I focus on thinking and drawing. I can not do insults to my past works. I have to get better than before and leave people after me with new inspirations.」 After a pause, the elder added: 「We can only charge forward. It will get nowhere to stop, and there is absolutely no room to pull back.」
Before bidding farewell, I asked Wu to write a few words for the readers of our paper. He wrote down neatly: 「 is the back view of an artist, which he can』t see himself」, explaining that he happened to be contemplating on the question of art lately.
「This is to say, do not care too much in the process of groping. Let the others comment on your .」
I started to understand why Wu, having achieved so huge success and facing with people suggesting to keep his 「」, stood staunchly with 「making changes in my senile years」 for a new combat on the road to art.
I couldn』t help to ask another question: 「What to you reckon as the most important in art making?」
「Ideas and affections」, answered Wu. He further stressed: 「Affections without ideas are shallow, while ideas alone are nothing but pointed. Lu Xun is an author of both ideas and affections.」
I got it, Mr. Wu. The value of life lies in creation and discovery. Fulfilling pleasures come out of it. |
