Let us know what you like to read, short stories or novels? There are many good novels available for select on the subjects from love and family through history and science to mystery and crime. I read T. Jefferson Parker's "The Blue Hour' and "Red Light" lately and they were very good, especially in his writng  by means of great characters to drive the stories.

It』s hard to start sharing what I have read because I don』t know about your preference in reading. Adelyn, This is not for you. Without a heck of good reading, you would not be the same one I know. I like reading best selling novels and short stories talking about things in our surroundings and have never read any famous literature by George Elliot, Shakespeare, Edith Wharton, Mark Nagler, Colleen McCullough, Henry David Thoreau, etc. I got the above author names from one of my net friends. As always, I believe reading is kind of a waste of time if you are not interested in what you do. A good book may not be good for everyone but good reading and comprehension should be helpful for most of us to improve our writing, speaking and listening in English. I have learnt a lot from my reading over years.

Here are parts of the novels I have read over the past year for reference:

Is the novel, The Day Trader, interesting and providing lessons for daytrading?
I read a lot but no time for novels. I used to read foreign novels and short stories in Chinese during my school years.

The Day Trader starts a story about daytrading, but it is more than that. I am not sure how much I have learned about daytrading from reading the novel.

weiguang JJ, daytrading is a dangerous business. the stock market is dominated by big players, the sharks. please, never ever think about you could play a nitch. winning a game is one thing and keeping the winning status is another. and worse, the survivors are rare-- because they all become lone wolves with an ugly face.

That is so true. Most day traders lose money. Real estate is a much better investment.

If you are not much into "thick" books, I strongly recommend "a tree grows in brooklyn". I finished the novel in three days. It's the single most enjoyable reading experience in my life. ^_^

Thank you for sharing. I heard about the book written by Betty Smith, It seems a very good one for any age groups. I am thinking about listening to the audiobook one day instead of reading.

was born in Los Angeles and has lived all of his life in Southern California.  His ten novels are:

Parker was educated in public schools in Orange County, and took a bachelor's degree in English from the University of California, Irvine, in 1976.  He was honored in 1992 as the Distinguished Alumnus.

His writing career began in 1978, as a cub reporter on the weekly newspaper, The Newport Ensign.  After covering police, city hall and cultural stories for the Ensign, Parker moved on to the Daily Pilot newspaper, where he won three Orange County Press Club awards for his articles.  All the while he was tucking away stories and information that he would use in his first book.

Laguna Heat, written on evenings and weekends while he worked as a journalist, was published to rave reviews and made into an HBO movie starring Harry Hamlin, Jason Robards and Rip Torn.  The paperback made the New York Times Bestseller list in 1986.

Parker's next ten books―all dealing with crime, life and death in sunny Southern California―were published to uniformly good reviews and appeared on various regional bestseller lists.  His writing has been called "potent and irresistible" (L.A. Times) and "resonant, literate and powerful" (Kirkus).   The New York Times wrote that "T. Jefferson Parker is a powerhouse writer."  Writing in the Washington Post, reviewer Carolyn See called The Triggerman's Dance "a masterpiece."  Where Serpents Lie and The Blue Hour appeared for five weeks on the Los Angeles Times bestseller list.  Red Light was number one on that list in May of 2000.  As was his next novel, Silent Joe, in May 2001. Silent Joe won the Edgar Award for Best Novel, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Best Mystery/Thriller, was nominated for the Hammett Award by the International Association of Crime Writers and has been optioned for film. Cold Pursuit was named novel of the year by the Southern California Booksellers Association. Jeff's new novel, California Girl, was released worldwide on September 28, 2004 and is poised to hit bestsellers lists internationally.

When not working on his books, Parker spends his time with his family, hiking, hunting and fishing, and haunting the public tennis courts.  He enjoys diving, snorkeling, and travel.  He escapes to a trailer in the desert in the spring and fall, to hike the country and not answer telephones.[/CENTER]

T. Jefferson Parker won 2005 Edger Award for the "California Girl" lately. As usual, the novel is about the people and things happened in Orange County, California, but in the 1960s. I started reading it last night and hope to wrap it up sometime early next week.
