Chapter 21: The Eye of the Snake
Hagrid』s first class sees the students going into the forest. Harry sees the horse-like creatures that had pulled the carriages at the start of the school year. They are called thestrals but only people who have had first hand experience of seeing death can see the creatures. Harry can see them because he saw Cedric die. Neville can see them because he saw his grandmother die. Professor Umbridge is inspecting the class and takes advantage of Hagrid』s nervousness to report his conduct as poor.
Christmas is approaching and the castle is decorated. Fred, George and Harry have been replaced on the Quidditch team. The new seeker is Ginny, the beaters are Andrew Kirke and Jack Sloper. None of them are as good as those they replaced but are trying hard.
In DA classes, all the students, including Neville, are progressing well. Harry promises to start on Patronuses after the holidays. At the end of class, Cho makes the admission, "I really like you, Harry." Harry and Cho have their first kiss (but it is not described in the book, just mentioned in hindsight.)
Hermione explains to Harry why Cho is so confused and upset at the moment. Hermione reveals she is still in contact with Viktor Krum.
Harry has a bad dream. He imagines that he is a snake who bites into a man - it is Mr Weasley. Harry wakes screaming and Ron gets Professor McGonagall to come. They go to see the headmaster.
Chapter 22: St. Mungo』s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries
Harry explains his dream to Dumbledore and the he felt he really was the snake biting Mr Weasley, not just seeing it happen. The portraits of past headmasters on the walls also listen attentively and Dumbledore asks them to assist in finding out what happened. One of the other headmasters finds out that Mr Weasley was indeed bitten and is in bad shape. They have taken him to St. Mungo』s. Dumbledore sends Harry and the Weasley children to Grimmaud Place using a portkey. Mrs Weasley joins them to let them know that Mr Weasley is alive but not at all well and points out that Harry probably saved Mr Weasley』s life.
They all go to St. Mungo』s the next day and find him on the First Floor (Creature-induced injuries). Mr Weasley』s arm is bandaged and keeps bleeding if they take the bandages off.
Moody and the Weasley parents suspect that Voldemort might be possessing Harry.
Chapter 23: Christmas on the Closed Ward
Harry begins to suspect that he might be Voldemort』s secret weapon and he tries to stay away from the others. Just as Harry decides to run away, back to Privet Drive so as not to endanger the others, he gets a message from Dumbledore to stay where he is.
He has another dream of going down the corridor toward the plain black door, whch he can』t open.
Hermione turns up at Grimmaud Place, having told her parents she doesn』t want to go on a skiing holiday with them.
Ginny points out to Harry that he is probably not being possessed. She was possessed by Voldemort in the past and his experiences are not like hers at all.
Christmas arrives and there are presents all round. Hermione gives Harry a magical homework planner. Ron gives Hermione perfume.
Hermione makes a quilt for Kreacher. They put it in Kreacher』s cupboard, which is full of junk he has salvaged before it can be thrown out by Sirius and the rest. One of the items is a picture of Bellatrix Lestrange, a dark witch who Harry saw tried through Dumbledore』s Pensieve some years prior. Kreacher seems to have left the house.
The kids visit St. Mungo』s where they find Mr Weasley has had his bandages changed a day early. That happened because he was trying complementary medicine (Muggle stitches C but they dissolve from the snake venom and don』t work well at all.)
They run into Professor Lockhart who is as annoying as ever and starting to regain some of his memory.
Neville is there with his grandmother. They are visiting Neville』s parents, who everybody except Harry thought were dead. In fact, they were tortured to insanity by Death Eaters. In fact, it was Bellatrix Lestrange who performed the Cruciatus Curse on them. For that she was sent to Azkaban.
Chapter 24: Occlumency
Dumbledore has instructed Harry to take lessons in Occlumency, the magical defense of the mind against external penetration, from Snape. Harry will have lessons after school every Monday night, pretending he has remedial Potions with Snape.
Mr Weasley is fixed, having learned his lesson about trying complementary medicine and realizing that it is not much good.
Sirius gives Harry a package that he says Harry can use to contact him if Snape is giving him a hard time.
Back at school, Cho mentions the upcoming Hogsmeade trip on Valentine』s Day but Harry doesn』t get the hint. Cho starts to leave frustrated when Harry realizes what happened and he chases her to ask her to go to Hogsmeade with him. She excitedly accepts.
At Harry』s first Occlumency lesson, he argues with Snape. Snape empties out some of his own thoughts into the Pensieve before teaching Harry. Harry begins learning to defend himself but doesn』t do very well. During the lesson, Harry realizes that the corridor in the dream he has been having is in the Ministry of Magic Department of Mysteries. That was where Sturgis Podmore was arrested for trying to break into. Harry thinks it must contain the secret weapon Voldemort seeks.
Harry has one of his visions and realizes that Voldemort is the happiest he has been in fourteen years.
Chapter 25: The Beetle at Bay
The Daily Prophet announces that ten Death Eaters have escaped from Azkaban, including Antonin Dolohov, Augustus Rookwood and Bellatrix Lestrange. The paper also says that Order member Broderick Bode has been strangled to death in St. Mungo』s by a Devil』s Snare that was smuggled in to kill him.
Hagrid finds out he is on probation. Everybody is very subdued and teachers are wandering about whispering to each other. That is partly because of Decree Twenty-Six, that teachers are banned from giving students any information that is not strictly related to the subjects they are paid to teach. Lee Jordan tried to use this to his advantage by telling Umbridge she was not allowed to tell Fred and George off for playing Exploding Snap in the back of class. Next time Lee was seen, he was bleeding from the back of his hand, as if Umbridge had made him write lines with the magical pen.
Harry』s scar is hurting more often and the only things he looks forward to are DA meetings.
On Valentine』s Day, Harry agrees to meet Hermione at midday but goes off with Cho for the morning. They go to a café where other couples are talking and kissing. Harry feels out of his depth and very nervous. Cho tries to talk about Cedric but Harry won』t. Harry is tactless and says he has to go to meet Hermione. Cho gets very upset and storms out.
Harry meets Hermione who is with Rita Skeeter. After some discussion, Harry agrees to give Rita an interview with all the details of what happened to Cedric and the fight with Voldemort. It will be printed by Luna Lovegood』s father in The Quibbler. Rita points out that the Daily Prophet only exists to sell itself and does not have good standards of independence. Harry names all the Death Eaters assisting Voldemort in the article.
Chapter 26: Seen and Unforseen
Harry tells Hermione about his date with Cho and gets very frustrated that he can't understand her behavior. Hermione tries to explain events from a teenage girl's perspective.
Ron reports that Quidditch practice was a disaster. At the next game against Hufflepuff, the games goes badly for Gryffindor and Ginny just manages to catch the snitch to bring their score up so Hufflepuff only wins by ten points.
Harry goes to sleep frustrated about many things and has trouble doing his Occlumency exercises to clear his mind. Instead he dreams he is back in the mysterious corridor with the locked door. This time he sees a glowing strip of faint blue light along the side because the door is ajar. Just as he pushed it open, he wakes.
At breakfast, Harry is inundated with mail because his story has appeared in The Quibbler. People are writing to say that they now believe him or that they still don't. Umbridge is furious about the article and by mid-morning, Educational Decree Number Twenty-seven is in place: Any student found in possession of The Quibbler will be expelled. Hermione is happy about this because she knows the decree means every student in the school will read the article. Harry is happiest because Cho comes to him to tell him that she believes his story and that he was brave to give the interview. Luna reports that her father is reprinting the paper because of all the interest.
Dreaming that night, Harry feels he is in another body - Voldemort's. He is talking with Rookwood, one of the escaped Death Eaters. Rookwood reveals that Malfoy had used the Imperius curse on Bode to make him retrieve the secret weapon from the Ministry. Harry wakes screaming.
At Harry's next Occlumency training session, he somehow manages to get into Snape's mind and see some of his childhood memories. Harry also sees what is through the door of his dreams - a black-floored circular room lit with blue-flamed candles.
Professor Trelawney has been fired by Umbridge and told to leave Hogwarts. Dumbledore intercedes and points out that he can still let Trelawney stay at Hogwarts even if she isn't teaching. Umbridge is furious, especially when she finds out that Dumbledore has already found a replacement - Firenze, the centaur from the forest.
Chapter 27: The Centaur and the Sneak
Divination classes start in a new classroom as Firenze cannot climb the ladder to Trelawney's room. Firenze mentions that he is now an outcast from the forest, rejected by the other centaurs for taking too much of an interest in human affairs. Firenze says that humans are essentially unable to see the future and that most of what Trelawney did was "human nonsense".
Firenze asks Harry and Ron to tell Hagrid that he should give up what he is doing because it is not working. Harry and Ron have no idea what he is talking about!
In DA classes, the students are trying to make Patronuses. Hermione is able to conjure her otter very easily. Dobby interrupts to warn them that Umbridge knows about the class and is on the way. The students all run for it and just manage to avoid being caught red-handed, even though Malfoy is lying in wait to trip them up.
Umbridge takes Harry to Dumbledore's office, which is full of people including McGonagall and Fudge. Harry denies he has been doing anything against the rules so Umbridge brings in Cho's friend Marietta who gave them away. Hermione's jinx has taken effect and Marietta has the word "SNEAK" written across her face in horrible purple pustules. Umbridge hasn't been able to work out a countrjinx. She reveals that Willy Widdershins overheard Harry in the Hog's Head and in exchange for giving the Ministry the information it overlooked his exploding toilets charges.
Dumbledore steps in to say that the group does exist but it was formed before Decree Twenty-four came in. Nobody has any evidence that there have been meetings since. Umbridge sent Pansy Parkinson to find a list of students in the group, and found it in the Room of Requirement. However, the names are listed as members of Dumbledore's Army and so Dumbledore says that he set up the group and the Ministry must punish him rather than the students. When Fudge says that he will be arrested at once, Dumbledore says that he won't come quietly. He hexes most of the people in the room to give himself time to escape. Dumbledore and Fawkes escape, the others wake and Fudge says that is the end of Dumbledore.
Chapter 28: Snape』s Worst Memory
Educational decree number twenty-eight makes Umbridge the head of Hogwarts School. The students are aligning in support of either Dumbledore or Umbridge. Malfoy reveals his allegiances, having been made one of Umbridge』s 「Inquisitorial Squad」, a group of students who have many of the powers of teachers to punish other students.
Fred and George have had enough and decide to create some mayhem. They no longer care whether or not they are kicked out of the school.
Umbridge summons Harry to her office and tries to drug him with a truth serum but Harry only pretends to drink. Harry continues to claim he doesn』t know where Dumbledore has gone until the conversation is interrupted by some explosions in the castle. Fred and George have set a crate of enchanted fireworks loose in the halls. As the teachers try to contain the fireworks, they run afoul of other enchantments that make the fireworks multiply whenever somebody tries to make the disappear. Even Hermione gets caught up in the spirit of rebellion.
Harry dreams again that night. This time he makes it into the circular room of identical doors and then opens one of them. He has a strong feeling that there is something in the room that he wants very much. However, he is woken by a firework before he finds out what it is.
Cho comes to Harry the next day to apologize for Marietta telling Umbridge about Dumbledore』s Army. Harry』s temper explodes and he is mean to Cho until she storms off.
Harry goes to Snape』s office for Occlumency lessons but Snape is called off to help Umbridge. Harry sees Snape』s thoughts swirling in the Pensieve and jumps into the thoughts.
He sees Snape as a teenager among his classmates including James, Sirius, Lupin and Wormtail. Harry sees that his father James is actually very cruel to Snape C so much that Lily, Harry』s mother, who wasn』t yet dating James, tells James to leave Snape alone. She calls James a bully.
As the scene progresses, Harry feels himself pulled from the Pensieve by the adult Snape, returned to his office. Harry realizes that his father was cruel and just as arrogant as Snape had always said.
Chapter 29: Career advice
There are only six weeks to exams and the students are getting nervous. Harry is particularly troubled by how he saw his father behaving. For years, James had kept Harry happy but now he was a source of confusion. Harry just wants to talk with Sirius. The only possible way seems to be to talk to Sirius through the Floo system but using Umbridge』s own fireplace, the only fire not being watched.
All fifth years are required to attend career advice meetings with their heads of houses. Harry goes to meet McGonagall but Umbridge is there as well. They talk about the possibility of Harry being an Auror (a dark wizard catcher). Umbridge suggests that Harry might not have what it takes to do the job. McGonagall is quite insulting to Umbridge and defends Harry』s abilities. Umbridge makes it clear she will try to stop Harry becoming an Auror but McGonagall says that she will make him an Auror if it is the last thing she does.
Fred and George have created a distraction so that Harry can use her fireplace. Sirius explains that James was acting foolishly but he was only a fifteen-year-old boy, like Harry is now. Sirius and Lupin both seem ashamed of their behavior. When they find out that Snape is no longer giving Harry Occlumency lessons, they get very angry. Harry just escapes from Umbridge』s office before he is caught.
Harry discovers that Fred and George had turned a corridor into a swamp. As Umbridge is about to punish them, they summon their brooms and take off, announcing that they are opening their new shop, 「Weasley』s Wizarding Wheezes」 at 93 Diagon Alley. The students cheer and applaud as the Weasleys fly off. Even Peeves salutes them!
Chapter 30: Grawp
Ron says he overheard Harry talking in his sleep. Harry lies about his dreams but Hermione suspects that he is not properly blocking his dreams using the Occlumency techniques.
The last Quidditch match of the season is between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. Harry and Hermione sneak off to see Hagrid. They all go into the forest to discover that Hagrid has a giant tied up there. He is Hagrid』s brother, Grawp. Hagrid has been trying to teach him to speak. This is what Firenze』s warning was about and why Hagrid has so many injuries C the training is not going well. Hagrid asks Harry and Hermione to look after Grawp if something happens to him.
Back at the Quidditch match, Ron saves a goal attempt and Gryffindor wins the match.
