My critic on the movie: 「Godess of Love (Ai Shen) directed by Wang Jia-wei.
Being curious and attracted by commercial propaganda, I bought and viewed the movies Ai Shen. It comes in two CDs with a total story time of about 40 minutes. The price is cheap and so is the story!
The movie starts with a professional prostitute (played by Gong Li) teach a young tailor (By Zhang Zhan) how to masturbate. The scene is not obscene but freak. Audience can see Gong Li inserts one of her hands between Zhang Zhan』s thighs. Apparently, it implies that the prostitute is playing with the young tailor』s organ. The camera shoots from the young tailor』s back. Audience can barely see the prostitute』s fingers moving around and up and down.
The content of the movie does not include a conventional story. We don』t call it a full story is because it is too short, too abrupt and loathing. Neither we can call it 「love」 because that is not the way to show love. In other words, it may be better to cast a complete adult movie than the one as is.
The movie has the following problems:
First, it is illogical. There is no reason for a prostitute to teach the young tailor to play foul (because the tailor is not that young, for he has known how to make woman』s dress). She could make love directly with him instead, if she really wants. The worse is that at the final of the movie, they do that again. It is not love because if the prostitute does love the young tailor, she could have made love with him, married him or lived. In other words, it is illogical to have such a plot in the film. Viewers can hardly find a reason for it.
Second, A mis-selection of the actor and the actress. Zhang Zhan, who plays the young tailor is over-aged. He has the look around 30. Also another mis-selection is the actress. Letting Gong Li play that role is simply an abuse. It is not that a famous star should not play erotic films but that the film must have social or literary value. Examples are: 「Moulin Rouge, A house is not a home, Lady Chatterley』s lover」 etc. Thereafter, Gong Li』s reputation as a star might be corrupted.
Third, The name of the movie is a blasphemy. It is not a conventional story. It is just an abrupt idea of impulse of the screen writer and the director who think it means something! Viewers may wonder how could such an act of teaching masturbation be titled as Goddess of Love (Ai Shen)? It could be interpreted that the screen writer and the director who have no value in the literary works.
Any way I have no intention to impose my personal idea on anyone, but do wish those who really want to know the real story of the movie would give it more comments. Thank you.
