I think you are talking about racial and ethnic minorities.
My understanding and observation is that some minorities are viewed as 'Americans with ethnic background', such as Jewish Americans, African Americans and European Americans. However, Asian Americans, Latino Americans and Arabic Americans, due to their shorter integration history, are still viewed as somewhat 'foreign' and will be called Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Mexican... for a few more generations. It is only fair since it took other ethnic groups several generations to rid of their 'marking' as well.
True, skin color is a major factor but African Americans looks totally different from pure Africans and black Americans don't really have a 'home country', they are Americans by default. |
