Arabica coffee tress were originally discovered by travelling Arabs on the cool high plateaus of Ethiopia. Arabica coffee beans produce a much sought after mild tasting coffee. Robusta coffee is a native of hot humid forests of western Africa. It is a more robust coffee containing a much high quantity of coffeine than Arbica.
The glowing of Arabic coffee in Tanzania probably started in the mountain of Morogoro. The Jesuit Missionary's are supposed to have introduced coffee to Tanzania in the 1890's, however coffee growing commenced as a commercial venture on the slopes of Kilimanjaro around 1900.
Some of the first coffee trees are as old as 100years and still can be found near Moshi.
In tanzania two types of coffee are grown. Arabica coffee is grwon (In tanzania) mainly around Moshi and Arusha, as well as Mbeya Region around Mbozi and also in southern Tanzania in Ruvuma Region in Mbinga. Robusta Coffee is grown mainly around the shores of Lake Victoria in Karagwe Region and to a lesser dgeree within some other area within Tanzania. it is said that Robusta Coffee was first brought to the areas around Bukoba as far back as the 1600's.
