There are different kinds of comic books. One is the tradition magazine format, and the other is the paper back novel size formet.
Go to any magazine store, or in to specialty stores that sells comics and you will have a large choice of comics: from superheros to long standing teenage comics such as Archie.  You can also have paperbacks that are collections of syndicated comic strips: peanuts, Calvin and Hobbs(if you have children, you would enjoy this),  and many many more.
In the last two decades, the book-form comics has also picked up steam. There are also translations of Japanese comics that are in surprisingly good English: Astroboy, e.g.  Some Japanese comics are, however, downright silly, immature or incomprehenisble.
A few months ago I picked up a surprisingly interesting comic book from my son: Road to Perdition.  It has been made into a movie.
Here is the write-up about the book from the back cover of the book. (Reading book jackets is another quick way to learn "well written English".)

If you want to pick up comic books to learn English and Culture, you will have to be selected. Some (luckily, only are few) are sold for their "shock value" and have no literary or even entertaining value. Most others, however, are written in reasonably good English, some are as good as a literary masterpiece.
Many of the comic strips on newspapers are drawn and written by college graduates. Doonesbury is very literary. Calvin and Hobbs,  Non-sequiter, Hi and Lois, Adam, Fox Trot are all well written. (Fox Trot's creator, e.g., is an Amherst College physics graduate.  Gerry Trudeau  of Doonesbury went to Yale, I believe.) For a selection of "comic strip English", check out my collection at 漫畫上的英語:

Here is something anyone would enjoy. The English translation of Tintin and Asterix. You won't learn comtemporary American culture from them, but you would enjoy reading them, and the translation is witty and in good English.
Tintin is also available in Chinese, so I heard.

I found this title on the Internet. Should be interesting (I love "Futurama" on the Cartoon Channel), but you will have to know a lot of contemporary American culture to fully appreciate the humour.

(A "cross-over" is when characters from one comic strip cross over to another comic strip.)

Like Tintin, Asterix has been translated into many languages, this one is in Greek.

For more pictures, go to google image and input search word tintin or asterix.

The links don't work because the address after www is automatically deleted by this forum. Someone here set up an automatic delete when the word rain_lane appears.  Use this "redirection link". (Wait about 10 minutes. I will have to put the info in.)
