9月3日深夜，警方公布了受害人和嫌犯的身份，他們為夫妻，涉嫌殺死妻子的華人男子叫馬家海（Jiahai Ma，音譯），受害人叫唐九梅（Juimei Tang，音譯），今年26歲，兩人的住址都報法拉盛Cherry大道。嫌犯被控謀殺、二級威脅、四級非法持有武器、二級騷擾。
根據警方的通告，9月3日下午5點41分，警方接到911報警電話，對發生在凱辛娜大道與Barclay大道交界的一起攻擊案作出反應，警方到達后，發現一名26歲的女子的頸部和身上被捅多刀，被救護車送到長老會王后醫院后，傷重不治。
殺人的嫌犯當場逮捕，被押到109分局審訊，據警方消息，探員一直工作到凌晨4點，后嫌犯被轉押到拘留中心。
在案件發生的第二天，記者見到案發的推拿店旁邊的理髮店和商店均已正常營業，商家對前一天發生的事情三緘其口，異口同聲說：「不知道」「昨天不在」「不清楚」，好像什麼事情都沒有發生。推拿店在地下室，但一樓通道「推拿」「BODYWORK」的牌子已經被拆走。
民眾對這起光天化日發生的命案眾說紛紜，據一位在微信群內可看到相關信息的走線來美黃姓女子說，他們夫妻兩人都是走線客，受害女子為貴州人，因她懷孕了，所以在邊境被抓后很快就被放了出來，來到紐約大約才一個月左右，但她在十多天前把肚子的胎兒打掉了，在推拿店當學徒才兩三天；嫌犯被從邊境拘留所放出來才一周左右，不知是他對老婆打掉懷中的胎兒不滿，還是他不高興老婆在按摩店工作，他到店裡與她爭吵，然後行兇。
109分局局長柯爾曼（Kevin Coleman）9月4日接受採訪表示，據初步調查，這是一起家暴攻擊案，嫌犯在中國就有家暴的歷史；這起嚴重的案件提醒人們：對於家暴事件，受害人要及時求助，家暴事件容易惡性循環，不容忽視，所以受害人要尋求幫助，以免釀成大禍。
