Recent IU Bloomington alumna Jennifer Huang named Rhodes Scholar

For Immediate Release

Nov. 19, 2018

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Her research passions include disciplines as divergent as mathematics, environmental anthropology and poetry, and her hobbies include rock climbing and fiction writing. She won multiple awards during her time as an Indiana University Bloomington student, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with the highest distinction and a 3.95 grade-point average in December 2017.

Now, IU alumna Jennifer Huang has been named a 2019 Rhodes Scholar. Huang is one of just 32 U.S. college students to receive the prestigious academic award.

"One of Jenny's Rhodes interviewers -- South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg -- was so impressed that he hired her to work for him," IU President Michael A. McRobbie said. "Jenny is a rare and refreshingly different kind of student, a pure thinker who defined herself in terms of her intellectual interests -- in her words, 'the fledgling questions that I want to answer' -- rather than in terms of a particular profession or academic field. Jenny's intellectual curiosity is grounded by her strong pragmatism and humane concern for others."

The 2019 U.S. Rhodes Scholars were announced Sunday by the Rhodes Trust. The scholarships cover all expenses for two or three years of study at the University of Oxford in England and may allow funding in some instances for four years.

Huang is IU's fourth recipient of the Rhodes Scholarship in the past 10 years and the 18th awardee since 1905. IU has now had two Rhodes Scholars in the past three years.

Huang earned her B.S. and B.A. in mathematics and social and cultural analysis, both in IU's College of Arts and Sciences, graduating with honors. From Granger, Indiana, she was co-valedictorian of Penn High School and came to IU as a Wells Scholar, one of 20 recipients of the university's most prestigious scholarship. She served as an intern for McRobbie, for whom she prepared a strategic plan for the digitization and preservation of the university's teaching and research collections.

"I am profoundly honored and humbled to be named a Rhodes Scholar," Huang said. "I'm brimming with gratitude for the professors, mentors and friends at Indiana University who have continuously pushed me to grow, learn and care about the complex world around us.

"In particular, I'm indebted to the Wells Scholars Program for the guidance and community that they provided since the very first day I stepped foot on campus. This university has shaped the values that I bring to my research, storytelling and public service, and I look forward to carrying those experiences to Oxford and beyond."

Huang's awards and honors at IU include the 2017 Stahr Senior Recognition Award, the 2017 Individualized Major Program Richard Young Award, the 2017 Myrtle Armstrong Best Undergraduate Fiction Award and the 2016 and 2017 Marie S. Wilcox Prize in Mathematics. In 2016, she was a National Science Foundation undergraduate fellow at the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico.

Her research and creative projects included her undergraduate thesis, "Stewardship of Iceland's Renewable Energy Resources," which focused on the cultural, economic and environmental tradeoffs associated with the advanced development of Iceland's geothermal energy industry. Through her "Cultural Evolution and the Poetic Canon" project, she examined the role of poetic exemplars in shaping the evolution of 20th-century Anglo-American verse, studying about 26,000 poems published in Poetry Magazine. Supported by an IU Arts & Humanities Council "China Remixed" Creative Grant, she co-produced a portfolio of podcast and prose pieces that profiled Chinese Americans in Indiana.

In April 2018, Huang co-authored a paper about the French Revolution and political behavior in leading science journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. She served as vice president of the Board of Aeons, a panel of student leaders that advises the university president.

Following graduation, she has been a research and editorial assistant for Buttigieg for his forthcoming book "Shortest Way Home" and a policy associate at the mayor's office in South Bend. She also serves as the civic engagement program coordinator at the Institute of Politics at the University of Chicago.

With her Rhodes Scholarship, Huang will pursue graduate degrees in the social science of the internet and in public policy.

The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest and best-known award for international study and is arguably the most famous academic award available to American college graduates. It was created in 1902 by the will of Cecil Rhodes, British philanthropist and African colonial pioneer.

This year, more than 2,500 students sought the scholarships, and 880 applicants were endorsed by 281 colleges and universities. Committees of Selection in 16 U.S. districts interviewed the strongest candidates.

Scholars are chosen on the basis of academic excellence, leadership, ambition for impact, concern for others and potential to make a difference for good in the world. The scholarship, valued at approximately $70,000 per year, pays all college and university fees and a stipend for expenses.

Below is a list of all of IU's Rhodes Scholars.

Kristiana Yao, who graduated summa cum laude in May, said she was 「still in shock」 after finding out she is among 32 Americans named Rhodes Scholars.

Kristiana L. Yao, who graduated summa cum laude from the University of Miami in May and has dedicated her career to improving health through public service, has been named a Rhodes Scholar and will begin graduate studies at Oxford University in England next fall.

She is among 32 Americans named Rhodes Scholars, considered one of the most competitive and prestigious academic awards for international study.

「I』m still in shock. It has not set in yet,」 Yao said Sunday. 「I』m excited to represent the University of Miami at Oxford next year.」

While at UM, Yao earned two degrees—a B.S. in Public Health from the School of Nursing and Health Studies, and a B.B.A. in Health Sector Management and Policy at the Miami Business School.

「UM provided a stellar education and the support was fantastic,」 said Yao. 「My favorite part of UM is the phenomenal faculty who let me come into their offices at any time and talk wonky health policy with them.」

Yao, a University of Miami Stamps Scholar, Foote Fellow, and National Merit Scholar, was awarded a Truman Scholarship in 2017 during her junior year, an award that recognizes an individual』s call to public service leadership. She is the third UM student to be named a Rhodes Scholar, and the first since 2003.

「Kristiana』s dedication and commitment to improving public health is remarkable,」 said Jeffrey Duerk, UM』s executive vice president for Academic Affairs and Provost. 「The University of Miami provided the academic rigor and interdisciplinary study that Kristiana was seeking, and she thrived in achieving her two degrees from the School of Nursing and Health Studies and the Miami Business School. She credits her professors for being 『invested in her success from day one,』 and is thankful for the mentoring and encouragement she received to pursue opportunities.」

Duerk also acknowledged the work of UM's Office of Prestigious Awards and Scholarships, "which advises and guides our students through the application process for these distinguished awards and programs."

Since graduating, Yao has served as a Dunn Fellow in the Office of the Governor of Illinois, focusing on health and human services policy. She will stay in that role until the fellowship ends in August. She intends to pursue an M.Sc. in Comparative Social Policy at Oxford.

Yao said her mission is to improve health through public service, and she hopes to 「work at the intersection of policy and implementation.」

「Health reform comes in waves,」 she said. 「I』m just looking for the best possible way to improve public health.」

Yao previously participated in several internships, including one in patient access at Jackson Health System, and in Washington, D.C. at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the Domestic Policy Council of The White House. She also worked on health policy for the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance. While at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Yao worked with the body charged with implementing the Affordable Care Act.

Yao, from Naperville, Illinois, has focused her research on devising better systems for health care delivery. Rhodes Scholars are selected based on a number of criteria, including academic excellence, personal energy, ambition for impact, ability to work with others, and a commitment to 「make a strong difference for good in the world, be concerned for the welfare of others, and be conscious of inequities.」

The previous two UM Rhodes Scholars were Ronald Ritter in 1988 and Devi Sridhar in 2003.

Claire Wang holding climate action now sign

Rowland Hall alumna and Duke University senior Claire Wang '15 has added a prestigious new title to her already impressive list of achievements: Rhodes Scholar. The Rhodes Trust on November 17 announced the names of the 32 Americans to win the 2019 scholarship, one of the most famous academic awards available to US college graduates.

Claire emailed some of her former Rowland Hall teachers Sunday, overjoyed to share the news. "I'll be Oxford bound next fall," she wrote. "Thank you all so much for your support over the years."

Claire is the sole Utahn among the 2019 scholars, and one of 21 women—a record for an American Rhodes class. Here's her profile as published by the trust:

"Claire R. Wang, North Salt Lake, is a Duke senior majoring in Environmental Science and Policy. She is a Truman Scholar and a Udall Scholar, and has a perfect GPA. She is President of the Duke Climate Coalition, was appointed by Duke's president to advise on campus sustainability and climate policy, and has led numerous environmental policy campaigns. Claire also has worked at the Rocky Mountain Institute, and for Earthjustice, the Sierra Club and Greenpeace. She aspires to a career as a climate-change policy advocate and to work at a global level to develop clean energy alternatives to replace fossil fuels. Claire will do master's degrees at Oxford in Environmental Change and Management, and Global Governance and Diplomacy."

Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest and best-known award for international study, provide all expenses for up to four years of study at the University of Oxford in England. Scholars must display academic excellence, good character, leadership skills, and commitment to service.

Claire has previously said she's fortunate to have attended Rowland Hall, where she felt supported and encouraged on her quest to make the world a better place. The valedictorian for the class of 2015 also said she appreciated her alma mater's emphasis on writing, which helped her as a student and an organizer. She credited her middle and upper school debate experience for giving her many of the skills she uses in her advocacy work: "Just like debate, running campaigns involves strategy, negotiation, and analysis," she said.
