World leaders stay at the Hotel Belvedere during the five-day gathering. This year's meeting brings together more than 2,300 of the world's political and business elite.

At a session on jobs, U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao discussed the outlook for workers and towns coping with the closing of a large manufacturing plant.

Attendees conferred in a hallway on Thursday. About half of the participants invited are corporate executives, according to the meeting's organizers.

Robert Mueller, director of the F.B.I., on screen and bottom center, addressed a plenary session on global risks. Other panel members included, from left, Gijs de Vries, counter-terrorism coordinator of Council of the European Union, Mohamed El Baradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Michael Chertoff, secretary of Homeland Security, and August Hanning, director of the Federal Intelligence Service, Germany.

Michael Dell, chairman of Dell, is among the technology executives in attendance. That group includes Bill Gates of Microsoft and Larry Page of Google.
