FALUN GONG STUDIES
Prof. M. T. Singer is a pioneer of psychiatric and cultic studies, her previous works include:
「Cults in Our Midst」 and
「Crazy』 Therapies: What are They ? Do they Work?」
Her Seven Key Points defining Cults are:
1. A self-nominated 「World Saver」 which would be able to liberate followers with his or her extra-ordinary knowledge;
2. Charisma;
3. Highest intention to recruit followers;
4. Put 「I」 opposite to 「Anyone Else 「, keep outsiders excluded, maintain that 「Only I, not He or She, can save You」;
5. Self-centered, cult of a Master;
6. Double moral standards;
7. Mind domination and manipulation.
Singer believes Falun Gong was identical to all these key points. She realized from the materials sent to her that Falunists vowed that 「cults」 must be gregarious and non-voluntary groups. According to Singer, this was simply a Falunist』s bias. Gregarious gatherings were mostly volunteers. Therefore, this cult leader applied a cheating approach to recruit followers, and was trying to make them relinquish their own thoughts so that they would become cult』s tools.
M. Singer interviewed 44 Falun related families, of them 35 were with Chinese background. All interviewees or family hosts were females. The reason they reached Singer was identical: their children, grandchildren or younger siblings all of a sudden terminated contacting their relatives. When family members called them by telephone, they seemed to be answering machines just reading 「turning Falun wheel」. The most worrisome matter was that these children took family members as 「devils」. They believed those who didn』t believe Falun Gong, including blood family members, were opposite to them.
Patsy Rahn presented a report at the conference titled "Falun Gong: Beyond the Headlines" where she provided an evaluation of the western press coverage of the Falun Gong, an evaluation of the potentially problematic areas of Falun Gong as a teaching and an organization, and an evaluation of the Chinese government's concerns. The report is
available at: www.let.leidenuniv.nl/bth/FalunRAHN.htm
Until recently, there were only three available information sources related to Falun: the Falun group itself, Chinese government and the Humanitarian Center Lu Shiqin.
Fang Zhouzi』s report was 「Two sides of Falun: Peaceful appearance and Dangerous ideology.」 The speaker』s discussion was on 「How to understand Flalun』s dogma and activities.」 He pointed out that critics to Falun were towards its disastrous consequences for humanity. The dogma announced by Li Hongzhi was full of conflicts that challenged humanitarian dignity. Fang』s report confronted Falun, discovered its mind manipulating approach and domination of the master over his followers. |
