在美國掙年薪十萬怎麼個活法?

10 萬年薪，在美國不同的城市，MEANING是不一樣的。

在加州不算什麼，在美國中部就挺管用的。。

In fact there is not too much difference for salary for the same job. For example, an IT job in Midwest pays you $85K, and will be about $90-100K in California, New York.

True.  That is why I don't want to move to CA or NY.  Only 2% to 5% gain in salary but have to spend 10% more on living cost, especially on housing which is about 10 times more.

but it will be big difference on other trades. especially on I/E business...

No, not all areas of CA and NY are that expensive. Unless you want to live in the hot spots in CA and NY, housing should be only 0.5-2 times higher than the rest of country.

Let me give you some real numbers.  In TX, a NEW house 3000sf is around 250K, can you find anything at this price and NEW house in CA?  I have some relatives are living in San Mateo, CA.  They paid 450K on a 1400sf town house which was built in 1960s.  Another friend is living in Foster City, CA, spent 620K on a 1965 house, around 2000sq.  None of them are a living in any hot spots.  Maybe my number of 10 times is higher, but I believe we have to pay at least 4 ~ 5 times more on housing.

I believe what you said, but it looks like hard to compare with numbers. I live in Midwest, and a new house 3000sf here is around 350K-450K. My friends in CA (about 40 miles from San Francisco) told me that similar houses would sell around 600K-800K.

Can we say 0.5-3 times higher then?

Well, it is hard to believe one can find a New house in CA at that price.  Just did a quick search over the internet and only find 1 new house in CA is priced 450K with 3000sf.  So maybe I am wrong.

In your case, yes, 0.5 ~ 3 is a resonable number. But for my case, 4 ~ 5 at least, since between you and I there is another 0.5 ~ 1 time difference, right?

Well, you are talking Arkansas, the poorest state in the country! and two year time also makes difference(they could have paying you more than before if you stay there).

There is always exception, but 45% gap is not a norm.

How much about the salary?

I do not think 100k a year is a shabby income and you CAN have a very decent living as long as you don't live in one those hot-spots mentioned in previous posts. I however do not think that 100k can bring you too far. Right now, me and my wife live are renting a 1500 sf townhouse in Texas, no children, paying off the second car, live a reasonably comfortable life. We do dine out a lot, about 4-5 times a week, spend around 40USD/per time. Every month we used up about 6000USD, not including the taxes and SSC. That is about 100k before tax and we do not indulge ourself with expensive clothes or gifts.

不過我想願意到國外混的，大多是比較嚮往自由些和個人些的人多些吧。

生活質量真的很難定義，估計很難有桿稱來衡量。
