in history, yellow sect, gelupa, got over control over all of different schools of tinetan lamaism, backed up by the qing dynasty. now without the support of the central government, with dalai is outside of tibet, his influence on gelupa school is still there, but is not as effective as used to be. his influence over other sects/schools is definitely diminishing, if it is not totally gone. other sects would be happily to take over the power base of the yellow sect (gelupa).
once he lost his influence inside of tibet, he would be useless for the politicians of the west.
藏青會 has very little influence inside of tibet, and they don't have the charm and the status of dalai lama. most of 藏青會 guys never been to tibet, even those did, they went there as tourists. they were born or grew up in the west. to those young tibetans in tibet, 藏青會 is more like those 民運 living in the west. actually worse than those 民運, at least most of those 民 guys born and grew up in china. 藏青會 knows very little about china and tibet. from what they are talking about, you can see how dumb those guys are. to average tibetans, 藏青會 is as foreign as those white 藏獨.
it is not exaggeration: those 藏青會 guys live in a fantasy world, and worse, they don't even realize this...
that's why dalai wants to be back, without his power base, without being inside of china, yellow sect would loss its power to other sects/schools.
dalai doesn' have that many cards to play.
