四十一章

上士聞道,勤而行之;中士聞道,若存若亡;下士聞道,大笑之。不笑不足 以為道。故建言有之:「明道若昧,進道若退,夷道若類,上德若谷,大白若辱 ,廣德若不足,建德若偷;質真若渝,大方無隅,大器晚成,大音希聲;大象無 形。」道隱無名,夫唯道,善始且善成。
Chapter 41
When a superior man hears of the Tao,
he immediately begins to embody it.
When an average man hears of the Tao,
he half believes it, half doubts it.
When a foolish man hears of the Tao,
he laughs out loud.
If he didn't laugh,
it wouldn't be the Tao.

Thus it is said:
The path into the light seems dark,
the path forward seems to go back,
the direct path seems long,
true power seems weak,
true purity seems tarnished,
true steadfastness seems changeable,
true clarity seems obscure,
the greatest are seems unsophisticated,
the greatest love seems indifferent,
the greatest wisdom seems childish.

The Tao is nowhere to be found.
Yet it nourishes and completes all things.

四十二章

道生一,一生二,二生三,三生萬物。萬物負陰而抱陽,衝氣以為和。人之 所惡,唯「孤」、「寡」、「不穀」。而王公以為稱。故,物或損之而益,或益 之而損。人之所教,我亦教之:「強梁者不得其死」,吾將以為教父。
Chapter 42
The Tao gives birth to One.
One gives birth to Two.
Two gives birth to Three.
Three gives birth to all things.

All things have their backs to the female
and stand facing the male.
When male and female combine,
all things achieve harmony.

Ordinary men hate solitude.
But the Master makes use of it,
embracing his aloneness, realizing
he is one with the whole universe.

天下之至柔,馳騁天下之至堅。無有入無間。吾是以知無為之有益。不言之 教,無為之益,天下希及之。
Chapter 43
The gentlest thing in the world
overcomes the hardest thing in the world.
That which has no substance
enters where there is no space.
This shows the value of non-action.

Teaching without words,
performing without actions:
that is the Master's way.

四十四章

名與身孰親?身與貨孰多?得與亡孰病?是故,甚愛必大費,多藏必厚亡。 知足不辱,知止不殆,可以長久。
Chapter 44
Fame or integrity: which is more important?
Money or happiness: which is more valuable?
Success of failure: which is more destructive?

If you look to others for fulfillment,
you will never truly be fulfilled.
If your happiness depends on money,
you will never be happy with yourself.

Be content with what you have;
rejoice in the way things are.
When you realize there is nothing lacking,
the whole world belongs to you.

四十五章

大成若缺,其用不弊。大盈若衝,其用不窮。大直若屈,大巧若拙,大辯若 訥。躁勝寒,靜勝熱,清靜為天下正。
Chapter 45
True perfection seems imperfect,
yet it is perfectly itself.
True fullness seems empty,
yet it is fully present.

True straightness seems crooked.
True wisdom seems foolish.
True art seems artless.

The Master allows things to happen.
She shapes events as they come.
She steps out of the way
and lets the Tao speak for itself.

四十六章

天下有道,卻走馬以糞。天下無道,戎馬生於郊。禍莫大於不知足;咎莫大 於欲得。故,知足之足,常足矣。
Chapter 46
When a country is in harmony with the Tao,
the factories make trucks and tractors.
When a country goes counter to the Tao,
warheads are stockpiled outside the cities.

There is no greater illusion than fear,
no greater wrong than preparing to defend yourself,
no greater misfortune than having an enemy.

Whoever can see through all fear
will always be safe.

四十八章

為學日益,為道日損。損之又損,以至於無為。無為而無不為。取天下常以 無事。及其有事,不足以取天下。
《今譯》
求學就一天比一天增加信念,求道就一天比一天減少信念。
減少又減少,一直到「無為」的境地。
以「無為」為用,萬物各得其所,各遂其生,所以可以說是無所不為。
治理天下當以「無為」為用,如果有為,就不能治理天下了。

Chapter 48
In pursuit of knowledge, beliefs are adding day by day.
In the practice of the Tao, beliefs are subtracting day by day.
Subtracting and yet again subtracting, until finally you arrive at non-action.
When nothing is done, nothing is left undone.

True mastery can be gained by letting things go their own way.
It can't be gained by interfering.

四十九章

聖人常無心,以百姓心為心。善者吾善之,不善者吾亦善之,得善。信者吾 信之,不信者吾亦信之,得信。聖人在天下,歙歙焉,為天下渾其心,聖人皆孩 之。
《今譯》
有道的人沒有私心,以百姓的心為心。
善良的人,我善待他﹔不善良的人,我也善待他﹔
這樣可使人人歸於善良。
守信的人,我信任他﹔不守信的人,我也信任他﹔
這樣可使人人守信。
有道的人在位,收斂自己的意欲,
使人心思化歸於渾朴,百姓都專注他們自己的耳目,
有道的人使他們都回復到嬰孩般(真純﹞的狀態。

Chapter 49
The Master has no mind of her own.
She works with the mind of the people.

She is good to people who are good.
She is also good to people who aren't good.
This is true goodness.

She trusts people who are trustworthy.
She also trusts people who aren't trustworthy.
This is true trust.

The Master's mind is like space.
People don't understand her.
They look to her and wait.
She treats them like her own children.

五十章

出生入死。生之徒,十有三;死之徒,十有三;人之生,動之死地,亦十有 三。夫何故?以其生之厚。蓋聞善攝生者,陵行不遇兕虎,入軍不被甲兵。兕無 所投其角,虎無所措其爪,兵無所容其刃。夫何故?以其無死地。
Chapter 50
The Master gives himself up
to whatever the moment brings.
He knows that he is going to die,
and she has nothing left to hold on to:
no illusions in his mind,
no resistances in his body.
He doesn't think about his actions;
they flow from the core of his being.
He holds nothing back from life;
therefore he is ready for death,
as a man is ready for sleep
after a good day's work.

五十一章

道生之,德畜之,物形之,器成之。是以萬物莫不尊道而貴德。道之尊,德 之貴,夫莫之命而常自然。故道生之,德畜之。長之育之,亭之毒之,養之覆之 ,生而不有,為而不恃,長而不宰,是謂玄德。 。
Chapter 51
Every being in the universe
is an expression of the Tao.
It springs into existence,
unconscious, perfect, free,
takes on a physical body,
lets circumstances complete it.
That is why every being
spontaneously honors the Tao.

The Tao gives birth to all beings,
nourishes them, maintains them,
cares for them, comforts them, protects them,
takes them back to itself,
creating without possessing,
acting without expecting,
guiding without interfering.
That is why love of the Tao
is in the very nature of things.

五十二章

天下有始,以為天下母。既得其母,以知其子。既知其子,複守其母,沒身 不殆。塞其兌,閉其門,終身不勤。啟其兌,濟其事,終身不救。見小曰明,守 柔曰強。用其光,複歸其明,無遺身殃,是為習常。

Chapter 52
In the beginning was the Tao.
All things issue from it;
all things return to it.

To find the origin,
trace back the manifestations.
When you recognize the children
and find the mother,
you will be free of sorrow.

If you close your mind in judgements
and traffic with desires,
your heart will be troubled.
If you keep your mind from judging
and aren't led by the senses,
your heart will find peace.

Seeing into darkness is clarity.
Knowing how to yield is strength.
Use your own light
and return to the source of light.
This is called practicing eternity.

使我介然有知,行於大道,唯施是畏。大道甚夷,而民好徑。朝甚除,田甚 蕪,倉甚虛,服文採,帶利劍,厭飲食,財貨有餘,是為盜竽。非道也哉!。

Chapter 53
The great Way is easy,
yet people prefer the side paths.
Be aware when things are out of balance.
Stay centered within the Tao.

When rich speculators prosper
While farmers lose their land;
when government officials spend money
on weapons instead of cures;
when the upper class is extravagant and irresponsible
while the poor have nowhere to turn-
all this is robbery and chaos.
It is not in keeping with the Tao.

五十四章

善建者不拔,善抱者不脫,子孫以祭祀不輟。修之於身,其德乃真;修之於 家,其德乃餘;修之於鄉,其德乃長;修之於邦,其德乃豐;修之於天下,其德 乃普。故以身觀身,以家觀家,以鄉觀鄉,以邦觀邦,以天下觀天下。吾何以知 天下然哉?以此。

Chapter 54
Whoever is planted in the Tao
will not be rooted up.
Whoever embraces the Tao
will not slip away.
Her name will be held in honor
from generation to generation.

Let the Tao be present in your life
and you will become genuine.
Let it be present in your family
and your family will flourish.
Let it be present in your country
and your country will be an example
to all countries in the world.
Let it be present in the universe
and the universe will sing.

How do I know this is true?
By looking inside myself.

五十五章

含「德」之厚,比於赤子。毒蟲不螫,猛獸不據,攫鳥不搏。骨弱筋柔而握 固。未知牝牡之合而□作,精之至也。終日號而不嗄,和之至也。知和曰常,知 常曰明,益生曰祥,心使氣曰強。物壯則老,謂之不道,不道早已。 □〔峻(去『山』換『血』)〕zui1。

Chapter 55
He who is in harmony with the Tao
is like a newborn child.
Its bones are soft, its muscles are weak,
but its grip is powerful.
It doesn't know about the union
of male and female,
yet its penis can stand erect,
so intense is its vital power.
It can scream its head off all day,
yet it never becomes hoarse,
so complete is its harmony.

The Master's power is like this.
He lets all things come and go
effortlessly, without desire.
He never expects results;
thus he is never disappointed.
He is never disappointed;
thus his spirit never grows old.

五十六章

知者不言,言者不知。塞其兌,閉其門,挫其銳,解其紛,和其光,同其塵 ,是謂玄同。故不可得而親,不可得而疏;不可得而利,不可得而害;不可得而 貴,不可得而賤。故為天下貴。

Chapter 56
Those who know don't talk.
Those who talk don't know.

Close your mouth,
block off your senses,
blunt your sharpness,
untie your knots,
soften your glare,
settle your dust.
This is the primal identity.

Be like the Tao.
It can't be approached or withdrawn from,
benefited or harmed,
honored or brought into disgrace.
It gives itself up continually.
That is why it endures.

五十七章

以正治國,以奇用兵,以無事取天下。吾何以知其然哉?以此:天下多忌諱 ,而民彌貧;人多利器,國家滋昏;人多伎巧,奇物滋起;法令滋彰,盜賊多有 。故聖人云:「我無為,而民自化;我好靜,而民自正;我無事,而民自富;我 無欲,而民自樸。」。

Chapter 57
If you want to be a great leader, you must learn to follow the Tao.
Stop trying to control. Let go of fixed plans and concepts,
and the world will govern itself.

The more prohibitions you have, the less virtuous people will be.
The more weapons you have, the less secure people will be.
The more subsidies you have, the less self-reliant people will be.

Therefore the Sage says:
I let go of the law, and people become honest.
I let go of economics, and people become prosperous.
I let go of religion, and people become serene.
I let go of all desire for the common good,
and the good becomes common as grass.

五十八章

其政悶悶,其民淳淳;其政察察,其民缺缺。禍兮,福之所倚,福兮,禍之 所伏。孰知其極?其無正。正複為奇,善複為妖。人之迷,其日固久!是以聖人 方而不割,廉而不劌,直而不肆,光而不耀。

Chapter 58
If a country is governed with tolerance,
the people are comfortable and honest.
If a country is governed with repression,
the people are depressed and crafty.

When the will to power is in charge,
the higher the ideals, the lower the results.
Try to make people happy,
and you lay the groundwork for misery.
Try to make people moral,
and you lay the groundwork for vice.

Thus the Master is content
to serve as an example
and not to impose her will.
She is pointed, but doesn't pierce.
Straightforward, but supple.
Radiant, but easy on the eyes.

五十九章

治人、事天,莫若嗇。夫為嗇,是謂早服,早服謂之重積德。重積德則無不 克。無不克則莫知其極。莫知其極,可以有國。有國之母,可以長久。是謂深根 固柢,長生久視之道。

Chapter 59
For governing a country well
there is nothing better than moderation.

The mark of a moderate man
is freedom from his own ideas.
Tolerant like the sky,
all-pervading like sunlight,
firm like a mountain,
supple like a tree in the wind,
he has no destination in view
and makes use of anything
life happens to bring his way.

Nothing is impossible for him.
Because he has let go,
he can care for the people's welfare
as a mother cares for her child.
