Yeah we talked this zoom before and you suggested where I should go to buy it. Unfortunately that online shop did not have Nikon's at that time (it has not had that one since). Thanks again anyway.
Why didn't you use shutter priority? Could your camera automatically raise the ISO to fit the requirement? Mine could do that. That's why I fixed the ISO setting. For me, if the weather is not stable, I would set ISO automatic match when the exposure is not enough (based on the shutter speed), for instance 1/500, but the threshold for the match is 1600 (not too high) to keep the photo quality from falling apart, then set manual  and f 8.

The D200's high ISO (>800) performance is very bad. Too much noise & too grainy. Shutter priority would give me trouble when I set ISO top limit to 800.

Sorry, I have no idea about D200. D90 has the function of automatic increase of ISO to certain limit (I could set it, for instance 1600), starting from certain threshold (based on the shutter speed). That's why live is simple for me even if I used the Manual. For instance, if I wanted to take photos at least 1/1000 fast, then I would set the ISO automation threshold at 1/1000. When exposure is not enough at what I set (for instance, F8, 1/1000), the ISO would be increased to keep the exposure correct until ISO reaching the limit. Because of that, I normally set this function off so the ISO would not go up unnoticed.
Hope your camera has this function too. Or you need a new one
how about D300s or D700 or D3?

BTW, the new 50-500 seems too big, 95mm, yours is 75mm, right?

The D200 does have the Auto-ISO function. However, like I said, anything above ISO 800 would be suboptimal.If I set AutoISO up limit to 800 and set shutter speed to, let's say 1/1500, a lot of time the aperture would be 6.3 at 500mm end with underexposed result. If I choose to set shutter (<1/1500s) & aperture at F8/9, I would face a lot of underexposed pictures. A good high ISO performance camera like D90/D300 or D700 really would help but at this moment I rather spend the money for lens.
