Andrew Fischer joined the academic staff of DESTIN in September 2005, although he has been involved in the Crisis States Research Centre since 2003. He is currently completing his PhD in DESTIN, which examines the interconnections between social and economic polarisation, social exclusion and ethnic conflict within the rapid albeit disempowered development taking place in the Tibetan areas of Western China. He graduated with an MA in Economics from McGill University in Montreal in 1994. During this earlier academic phase he researched social and economic development in Canadian aboriginal communities, international underground economies, informal finance in developing countries, and, more generally, the theory and practice of economic development. Between his MA and PhD, Fischer left the academic world and spent seven years living in Tibetan refugee communities in India and Nepal, during which he focused on the study and practice of Tibetan Buddhism in addition to working in several local NGOs and community-based organisations. His experience in developing countries spans almost twenty years, including work and field research in Central America, South Asia and China.
