Love can be cultivated after marriage.

Whether there exists such an expression in English language I do not know. I wonder whether it can be expressed this way?

tumujerome  wedded before falling in love

Not a translation.

But isn't 先結婚後戀愛 amounting to putting the cart before the horse?

masuyun  Thank you very very much

Acutally, I want to use the sentence to express the transition of my attitude towards my major in college. At first, I , as a freshman, did not know its professional background and the application. However, with the past three years' learning, I have established a comprehensive understanding of my major.

I think "先結婚後戀愛" is a proper expression in Chinese that represents the transition. Maybe we should not translate it word by word into English and there is an authentic English expression to expound what I want to say.

linjian  some virsions

1) Interest is someting to be cultivated.
2) Love is based on understanding

tempax  Orientating the objective before development!

based on your description, i think
"Orientating the objective before development!"
is ok.

imho  though married as strangers they fell in love eventually

really don't know.

when interepreted as putting the cart before the horse or misplacing objective and development, it suggests that a couple married as strangers could never develop a romantic relationship beyond boring daily drills 先結婚後戀愛. but i do think it is possible as advised by the old saying: 距離是感情.

xiaoliuliu  請問 "Once a geek, always a geek."

A "geek" is a socially awkward person, often more at ease with computers than people. A person of supirior intelligence. Genius.

tumujerom  (kind of) move a mountain with a teaspoon

flyfish5  Give me a fulcrum and I will move the earth

zoelove  With the same set of shadowboxing, matter how you play it, dedicatedly or pretendingly, the posture

With the same set of shadowboxing, matter how you play it, dedicatedly or pretendingly, the posture looks all the same. But when it comes to defending real pressure, the one with only posture will not work. The reason is that he/she did not fully understand the key concept in using force, and could t concentrate on his playing.

China』s entrance into WTO in December 2001 was the spark that re-ignited the growth of China』s automotive industry

FYRO

Since joined WTO in December 2001, Chinese automobile industry has achieved a rapid development like a spark flaming up.

coolmax  good rovi

不過個人認為 like a spark flamming up是多餘的,老外聽了肯定會覺得費解。

rovi297  Well, thanks for your valuable opinion, and I agree with you, however...

Well, thus I must be double careful with my remarks, but on second thought, why? If they didn't have heard about it, but from now on, they would hear it. hahahaha......

2. Great man of letter -----Lu Xun, once upon a time, he said to us "The first one to eat crab such a creature crawling on ground was the bravest person on earth」

Cheers

Since joining WTO in December 2001 ,China's auto industry has grown by leaps and bounds, much like a fire ignited by a single spark, spreading relentlessly

imho  describe your intention clearly next time when you ask a question

China』s entrance into WTO in December 2001 was the spark that re-ignited the growth of China』s automotive industry

laoxianggg  FYR

Or, how about:

coolmax 94cool!
millions of thanks

What can book reading do for your Oral English?

lilianzh  To improve Oral English

I long for the experiences from all of you on how to improve the Oral English from Medium to High level. I have been working with Foreingers for all most 4 years in foreign company. The major daily communications were in English whatever oral or writing. But I still feel my English was just combined with simple English sentences, with several common words perhaps, with short answers. I really want to express my ideas and thinkings more accurately and exactly.

Would you please help me?

karenb  Well, since the topic of this particular forum is "book reading"

I'm going to suggess that one of the best ways that you can improve your oral English (and your other English skills) is by reading books. Become an English "bookworm".

I also recommend that you find books written in the past 50 years, which is a little difficult to do in China, because what's usually available in the bookstores are the "classics" -- although these are often good stories, the problem is they use archaic English, which isn't used today.

What can book reading do for your Oral English?

1) Increase your vocabulary
2) Improve your ability to express yourself in a natural way in English
3) Improve your grammar
4) If you read novels, you can pick up idioms and such from the dialogs.

lovenothate  a killer joke

I had a terrible week last week! I oredered a pizza. When it arrived I opened the lid. There was no pizza inside. It was stuck to the lid! Then, even worse, my favorite uncle died! At the funeral they opened his coffin. He wasn't there. He was stuck to the lid.

peihai1994  What is the meaning of "the stuck to lid"

Would you like to tell me,

pullmyfinger  stuck to the lid

stuck means glued. Sometimes in the west when you get your pizza home the soft melted cheese gets glued to the lid. So I guess the uncle was all rotten and gross and his dead body got glued to the lid of the coffin.

discoverer  How to translate 「敢為天下先」?thanks!

How to translate 「敢為天下先」(「通用-凱迪拉克」汽車的中文廣告語)?thanks!

looongg  dare to be first to eat the crab!

discoverer  thanks !

thank you!

shinjo2000  but!

how about eat tomato??

Front runner leading the world.

discoverer  thank you all!

thank looongg,shinjo2000 and yokel88888,thank you all for your help !I』m so grateful to all of you。

tumujerome  Dare to be the leader!

discoverer  thank you all!

dare to be first to eat the crab!
dare to be first to eat tomato!
Front runner leading the world!
Dare to be the leader!

learning  fyi

scare nothing!
nothing will stop you!

cabiean  Dare to declare!

learning  yeah, also support tumu.

discoverer  :)

hupotan  Why not

its pioneering spirit of 「endeavoring to be the first with bravery」

hly2004  Dare to try/Dare to lead!/and also Dare to win!

Dare to try/Dare to lead!/and also Dare to win!!
還是Dare to be a leader
Dare to try ,dare to succeed(也是給買車人的鼓勵)

lixunhuan  Dare to be the first

hly2004  it's agressive

tumujerome  Dare to go beyond the ultimate!

meaning: Here we at Cadillac are not a^fraid of being the first to try
slogan: Dare be the first is Cadillac!

hly2004  bingo

tempax  try

The usual behavior looks perfectly, while the key performance is badly.
OR:
To appear intelligently, but to act stupidly.

it's not clear whether he'll make an exhibition of himself then.

rovi297  A wise head behind curtain, a dumb head before curtain.

hly2004 a smart guy among people, a stupic guy before audience

tumujerome  A swan off stage, a swine on stage.

hly2004 a wit off stagea shit on stage

sophiaren  hehe~~ Tumu's version is so cute , Thank you all.

Cheers~~

A swan off stage, a swine on stage.

sophiaren  then how about

A man of all off stage , a man of none on stage

rovi297  台下諸葛亮 台上豬一樣 ==this is rendition, the context is already
given. Am I right, coolmax, buddy?

laoxianggg  know-it-all off stage, bugger all on stage.

sophiaren  thank you laoxianggg for your modification

zzwsdrz  Mr Know-all on stage, while Mr Know-nothing off stage

imho  a champion off stage but a loser on stage

「台下諸 台上豬」a cowardly champion?

ruotong Dear Sophia JJ

Your work sounds great fun.
You are really talented portraying their faces, hehe.
If i were you, i would slam the door noisily hehind and stride away with my head high up and eyes closed( to show my disdain and dissatisfaction).
Anyway, hope you go on well with your job all the time

imho  he (is a person who) confuses himself

this is how i would tell about a person who behaves as you said.

sophiaren  Thank you ruotong and imho.

Yeah, they confused themselves confused me a lot.

and Laoxianggg,
thank you for your advise,
I think that would be a better and smart way to deal with these 「swans」 ,hehe~~

If you want what visible reality can give you, 如果你渴望物質世界
You』re an employee.
If you want the unseen world, 如果你追求精神世界
You』re not living your truth.
Both wishes are foolish,
But you』ll be forgiven for forgetting.
That what you really want is你真正需要的是
love』s confusing joy.
And gamble everything for love,
If you』re a true human being.
If not leave this gathering.
Half-heartedness doesn』t reach into majesty.
You set out to find God,
But then you keep stopping for long periods.
At mean spirited roadhouses.

2 you are not living your truth

If you want what visible reality can give you,
You』re an employee.
If you want the unseen world,
You』re not living your truth.
Both wishes are foolish,
But you』ll be forgiven for forgetting.

That what you really want is你真正需要的是
love』s confusing joy.
And gamble everything for love,
If you』re a true human being.
If not leave this gathering.
Half-heartedness doesn』t reach into majesty.
You set out to find God,
But then you keep stopping for long periods.
At mean spirited roadhouses.

For instance, the hazards brought by science and technology are equally decisive to its formidability; new and challenging ethics matters appear , like the decaying or vanishing of the traditional ethics, unavoidability of humane alienation , growing hazardous ratio and so forth. Therefore, it is needy to fully comprehend the relationship of ethics and science and technology which are mutually seeping into each other. Both should have harmonious development in order to boost the overall and sustainable development of the humans. The scientific and technical workers must develop the ethics views of benefiting the whole humans and this is the solely wise choice.

i tried to revise the original chinese text. here is my new version. any comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i really don't like this superfluous writing

laoxianggg  good work imho
BTW, I don't think we will ever 全面理解..., so suggest translating it to "a good understanding of..."

A belated try: the translation below would have been different (better, perhaps) had I noticed laoxianggg and imho posts upstair. -The cost of a lunch!

The development of science and technology has brought great advances to mankind, and on its wake, also many dilemmas for mankind』s continuing progress. For instance, contributions of science and technology are matched by their potential harm, modern science and technology is posing new and challenging ethical issues, traditional ethics is being eroded and slowly relegated to oblivion, man is being inevitably alienated from his surroundings and systemic risk is on the rise etc,.
Therefore, a good understanding of the relationship between science and ethics, their mutuality and harmonious development is necessary for mankind to achieve sustainable growth that is inclusive and balanced.
Science workers must establish an ethical value system which is beneficial to mankind; it is the only choice.

qimingfu (oedipusqi)   Discuss a collection of sentences easily stained with chinglish color

leungshuren   I don't see any Chinglish

All of your sentence translations are wonderfully grammattical.  I thought Chinglish usually involved some twisted grammar mixed with Chinese culture or idioms.  So  there seems to be no Chinglish here.

The only comment I have is that #8 needs to use the word "deceased", which means dead, not cease, which means to stop doing something (but does not apply to living).

qimingfu (oedipusqi)   Thanks for your overall  responses ,cordial chaps. Also I make an apology at the false one as Leungshuren picked out .

Long ago I had intention to select some sentences easily colored with chinglish and post here . In order to avoid first impression of false answers , I then just gave out the right ones . That is the reason it arose in your heads .

The thread will be continued  , I look forward to more comments on them .

spider007   More chinglish sentenses

People mountain, people sea.
Give you some colors to see see.
Hehe, these sentenses appeared in some of the English teaching newspapers. Can you believe that?
They sounds more like jokes.

freakyqi  hi...

I'm learning chinese... I understand the real meaning of the first phrase in spider's post, can someone please explain the correct meaning of the second one? I've never seen it and wouldn't know how to interpret it.

qimingfu (oedipusqi)   Teach him a lesson.

qimingfu (oedipusqi)   15.
China has rich water , grassland, and sloping land resources which have great potential for exploitation.
Or using "be rich in " structure as above.

freakyqi  Thank you qimingfu - you're helping me learn Chinese!

It's very difficult. Even if we know what the characters are, we cannot always directly translate them. Chinese is a very difficult language, but I'm going to keep at it! It's difficult, but luckily it's also fun!

qimingfu (oedipusqi)   no problem !  I will do what i can do for you.

Please  review my English and give me advice .

China has rich water , grassland, and sloping land resources which have great potential for exploitation.
Or using "be rich in " structure as above."

--In English we would commonly say "China is rich in water, grassland, etc..."

#2 - "Hale" is a good word for writing a story, and maybe it is used often in the UK or Aust., but it's not used in everyday speech in the US. Some people who are not well-educated might not even know what it means. It's a good word though.

#5 - "His left leg is lame." is a bit shorter and more likely to be said.

#13 - "naked eye" not "eyes" - I'm really not sure why, but that phrase is ALWAYS "naked eye", never plural! I know, I know, we have two eyes! Don't ask me why!

Your English is very good!

you said:
"Long ago I had intention to select some sentences easily colored with chinglish and post here . In order to avoid first impression of false answers , I then just gave out the right ones . That is the reason it arose in your heads ."

Just a few tiny things I would do:
Long ago I had THE intention to select some sentences easily colored with chinglish and post THEM here. In order to avoid first impressionS of false answers, I (no "then") just gave out the right ones. That is the reason it arose in your heads.

Of course I wouldn't capitalize, I did that so you could see the changes. The last word could also be "minds". These are all very small changes. Judging from your writing, you sound very intelligent.

qimingfu (oedipusqi)   I learn more from your great amendments . Merry Christmas , Freakqi.

A hard season there , isn't it ?

freakyqi   Yes...
It's a busy season! Everyone is trying to shop for presents and food... and make food, all while still working. People try to get off work early or skip a day if they can, so they can get things done. I had off earlier this week, so I did all my shopping in one day. It was great to do it during the day when most people are working. The stores are too crowded at night or on weekends, I won't even go at those times!

I think people buy too much. Some people think they need to buy TONS of stuff for people, especially for kids, but I think many people go overboard.

qimingfu (oedipusqi)   More to come...

We adopt the policy of regional autonomy in places where are prevalent in ethnic minorities . These region have witnessed continued economic and social development.

In places where there is a high concentration of ethnic minorities regional autonomy is in practice . ...

We are going in the right direction , firm in conviction, steady in our steps , gradual in our approach when carrying out the reform and opening-up and that we have achieved tremendous successes.

Joint venture should abyde by (observe) the laws, decrees and pertinent regulations of the People's Republic of China.

Or All activities of a joint venture shall comply with the provisiones of the laws,...

It's not easy to master acupuncture unless after using painstaking effort.

Or The mastery of acupunsture is not easy and requires painstaking effort.

The frogs that crouched among the reeds were shouting in their full efforts(ethusiastically).

My working experience  in the twenty years teaches ( shows, demonstrates, indicates) that practice makes perfect.

Our purpose is clear, how to initiate it? We must follow an open policy both international and domestic ,observing the laws governing social-economic development.

How are we go about achieving these goals? We must observe the laws governing social-economic development and follow an open policy both international and domestic.

braveheartcn   Chinglish is my old friend. ^_^

freakyqi
Here's a few comments, but remember, I can't understand all the Chinese, so I don't know how ACCURATE the translation is, I just know what sounds awkward or better in English:

18. the second one sounds better. The first one isn't too bad, but the second one is easier to understand.

19. The second one is better.

20. We wouldn't say "in their full efforts". We might say "enthusiastically". Or maybe "...with all they had"... depends on how you want to sound... poetic, simple... ?

21. Twenty years of experience has taught me 'practice makes perfect'.
or
"Twenty years of experience has shown me that practice makes perfect."

22. Our purpose is clear, how to initiate it?  = Our purpose is clear, and how shall we initiate it?
Or use your whole second choice. It's very good.

qimingfu (oedipusqi)
First , Freakyqi , please accept my sincere compliments in this specila festival , to you and your kindred.
Though after an odyssey of less a score springs and winters , I should regretfully accept the fact that fluent English needs a long run ahead . To emulate the natives is not very easy . Thanks to your valueless instructions , i may enter into a fresh  watershed  to exploit treasures in English . In your convenience , please practice further more . If so , some visitors and i will benefit from your words .

qimingfu (oedipusqi)
They are different from ours in the way they think , the way they do things and their traditional habits.
The way they think , the way they do things and their traditional habits are different from ours.

freakyqi
Instead of "traditional habits" it is simpler and more common to say "traditions".
Also, there is no space before a punctuation mark, just after.

qimingfu wrote:
"They are different from ours in the way they think , the way they do things and their traditional habits.
The way they think , the way they do things and their traditional habits are different from ours."

In the first sentence, you cannot say "different from ours" because the sentence didn't yet say what is different. You can say "different from us". In the second sentence you CAN say "ours" because it's the traditions, etc you are refering to. I'm not sure I explained that well, sorry.

Anyway, both sentence constructions are fine.
I'd say either:
"They are different from us in the way they think, do things, and in their traditions.
or
The way they think, do things, and their traditions are all different from ours."

I guess you could say "act", but that might refer more to their personalities and social habits, like "behave" or "behavior".  "Do things" would include how they do business, do household chores, cook, everything. It depends on what the original intention of the sentence is.

As my daughter is growing up, I find that she is obviously more attached to her daddy than to me. When she has something delicious to eat, she always remembers to keep some for her daddy, but seldom thinks of me. Every time we go out and take photos, she always presses her face on her daddy's, hugging tightly, leaving me alone aside. Previously when she was asked 'who is good, daddy or mummy', her answer is always 'daddy'. Later, having been taught by my husband, she now turns to answer 'both are good'. Last September, we moved to a new house and bought two room plants, which we called small trees. Since he thought the function of plants do great good to enhance the air quality inside, my husband bought one more plant home, but I thought it was unnecessary and the china vase containing the tree looked vulgar. The next day after my husband went out for work, my girl went to tell me, 'mummy, what a nice tree!' Then I was so surprised by her childish word for her daddy. My husband is so busy for the decoration of the new house that I invited my parents home for help. One day, smiling, my mother said to me, 'Girl, you will have a tough time in the future.' In fact, she was worried that my girl will help her daddy to 'bully' her girl.

My daughter became more attached to her father than to me as she was growing up. Whenever she tasted a delicious food she would ask me to reserve a portion for her dad. Meanwhile, she showed less concern about me. When we go out to take photos, she would hug her daddy tightly and press her face on her daddy's, and would have forgotten me for the moment. My daughter used to answer "daddy" when asked "whom would you like more?" Later, persuaded by my husband, she adopted a new answer "daddy and mommy". Last September, we bought two indoor plants after having moved into our new house. We called the plants "little trees". My husband believed that the presence of indoor plants would improve air quality because of the photosynthesis processes in progress. So he brought home one more plant which I felt unnecessary. I disliked the out-of-fashion look of the vases that held the plants. The next day, after my husband went to work, my daughter said to me: "Mommy, how pretty the little tree is!" Wasn't she trying to help her daddy? My husband was too busy to take care of the remodeling and decoration of our new house so he invited my parents to come over to help. After a while, my mother joked with me: "Daughter, you will have a tough time!" She was worrying about an alliance in the family between my daughter and her daddy.
