actually it is the "only" right word to use in each case where you used the word. and i believe coolmax is right that once a person can use these words natually at places where these words should be used, he will soar with his English.

it is sad that coolmax stopped writing this series early this year and he never responded to the numerous calls that begged him to continue. this is by far the most welcomed series on chinadaily bbs and i hope coolmax will resume writing one day.

"This cake..." is not Chinglish. Whether to say "this" or "the" depends on the context of the conversation.

What does "them" refer to?

If you say "try again", it means that you have alreay done something, but it did not work. If you use present tense, it should be "think again".

It should be like this: I tried a couple of times, but failed.

How about "I'll do my best". It is uncommon to say "try my best".
