Thanks.  There were so many English experts in China during 1950's and 1960's.  Why did they let 《紅河村》get away and become the standard title of a popular song?  That is something I cannot figure out.

《紅河村》a singable lyrics:
人們說你就要離開村莊，要離開熱愛你的姑娘。為什麼不讓她和你同去？為什麼把她留在村莊上。走過來坐在我的身旁，不要離別的這樣匆忙，要記住紅河村你的故鄉還有那熱愛你的姑娘。

it is one of my favorite and it moves me everytime i listen to it.

i never noticed the lyrics i heard, which was so touchy, was not even a liberal translation but something i would call new work. what a wonderful piece of creative work!

i also read the more faithful version of the lyrics and i like it too. i remember i heard someone sang with this version of the lyrics. but i was not fallen for it. the words didn't go along with the music well. the lyrics was not very singable.

back to the very singable lyrics, displayed above, the catch word for the place where the sad story happened is a small village, not a valley. i think this could explain partially why the title was red river village. the original translator, with his zeal to perfect, had chosen an equally liberal approach towards the title as he did with the rest of the song.

the song will live a long life with the lyrics and the title as we see them here now.

Red River Valley[/COLOR] is one of my favorite songs, too.  Its melody and lyrics, in both English and Chinese, are beautiful.

You have made your point.  The change from "valley" to "village" could be intentional, not an error in translation.  But how do you explain the fact that, after so many years, its Chinese title has been changed back from 《紅河村》to《紅河谷》 by others[/COLOR]?

that's a big question. i can only make a guess and then speculate as there may be a dozen different explanations with each being a legitmate one.

it could be that someone didn't like the free s^tyle translation of the original words of the song and wanted a more accurate translation hence the literal version and a faithful title: red river valley. my speculation is that it's mostly not for better but for change or zeal to change.

On May 8, 43-year-old Teresa Teng died from a severe asthma attack while on a trip to Thailand. When the tragic news was released, it was as if an enormous boulder had been dumped into the lake of the global Chinese community, sending ripples in all directions. It was not only ordinary Chinese in Taiwan, Hong Kong, mainland China, and Southeast Asia who were saddened by the incident and thought fondly of their many memories. The media devoted a tremendous amount of space to the story, and many groups bestowed posthumous honors and accolades on Ms. Teng. The staff at her record company in Japan wore black armbands for a week. Teresa's death was reported in the New York Times and Time magazine, and these journals described her enormous impact on fans of Chinese music.

給約翰的一封信[/COLOR] is a wrong translation of the song title, A Dear John Letter.  It should be 絕情書, 絕交信[/COLOR] or someting like it.  A Dear John letter is a letter terminating a relationship, a letter from a woman ending a romantic or sexual relationship.  「John」 is a common male given name.

This is an ancient pipa tune, originated from "Flute and Drum at Sunset" written in 1875. It is one of the best known pieces of Chinese national music. Moreover, it is often been adapted for ensembles of various instruments. Wei LI re-arranged it into a guzheng solo piece. He divided it into eight movements: "Bell and Drum from the Tower", "Moon Rising above the Eastern Mountain", "Multi-layered shadows of flowers", "At the Distance Where the Water and Clouds Meets", "Fisherman』s Song at Dusk", "Whirling Willows Lapping against the Shore", "Boat Returning Home", and "Coda". Developed from simple and beautiful melodies, LI transformed it into a beautiful piece with varying rhythms and smart motif. The music depicts the fascinating scenes of the moonlight over the river in springtime. The movements seem like a long scroll of Chinese traditional painting in soft colors with detailed sketches of an infinitively enchanting landscape. Listening to his piece of music does soothe one's soul![/FONT]
