In addition to recently emerged GMO crops that carry BT gene, Bacillus thuringiensis, bacterium that produces BT protein crystals has been used in the fields since 1950, as the single most important and environmentally friendly insecticide. If it is toxic to human or to animals, it would have been banned long tome ago.
For those of you who trust organic grown foods, you are eating loads of BT, because that is what organic growers used for pest control.
The most concerns you guys raised are B.S.
Peptides dont cross guts readily because these are macromolecules and they are readily digested. Amino acids are nutritional, not toxic to your body. Dr. Wang's argument is fundamentally wrong. His citing of other bacterial toxins is irrelevant to to this debate, because proteins are made differently and behave totally differently. If he suspects this does occur, he needs to produce some evidence to make a strong case to his argument, otherwise, its just his believe, not fact-based. So far, we haven't seen any credible evidence suggesting that way. Not even any anti-BT IgE can be detected in people who consume GMO Soybeans.
BT kills insect intestinal epithelial cells through specific interactions. On top of that, BT's killing needs some help from other bacteria species reside in the gut. Vertebrates carry vastly different gut bacteria species from those in insects. That just adds another layer of security to the safety of BT. |
