By the late 1950s, the population in China was ~600 million. If the death toll from starvation during the three-year disaster period was really 30-70 million (the figures of 30M, 36M, ..., 60M, 70M were separately presented in different articles), on avreage, of 10-20 persons one should die of starvation. Is this believable? At least in my hometown, a country village in Shichuan, it was not true although there was the phenomenon that a few died of starvation. But anyhow, it was a tremendous disaster for China and Chinese people, and no one hopes it happen again. |
