it is the story of a courageous woman in southwestern China who sings folk mountain songs and rebels against oppressive landlords. According to the Zhuang legend from which the film was adapted, Third Sister Liu was a Tang dynasty (618-907) peasant girl who became a heroine among her people.


Abstract:
"The film is based on an ancient folk tale. Beautiful and clever Third Sister Liu, the legendary Maiden of Song, is charged with false crimes and thrown into the river. Fortunately, she is rescued by an old fisherman who takes her into his family. Third Sister Liu and some young women tear down the sign put up by tyrant landlord Mu Huai-jen forbidding people to pick tea in the mountains. In a battle of wits by songs, Third Sister Liu sends Mu and his flunkeys scurrying. The irate landlord kidnaps Thirs Sister Liu and tries to intimidate her but fails. Ah Niu, son of the old fisherman, rescues her. Landlord Mu and his flunkeys pursue them. The villagers hide Third Sister Liu and Ah Niu and make fools of Mu and his men. Beginning life in a new place, Third Sister Liu and Ah Niu continue to inspire the people to fight feudal forces with their songs. 'Third Sister Liu' was honoured with the prestigious of the Hundred Flowers' 'Best Music Award,' 'Best Photography Award' and also the 'Best Art Award,' showing that it was supported by most of the audience."

Zhang Yimou, world-renowned Chinese film director, Saturday began directing a folk musical, "Third Sister Liu (Liu Sanjie)", in an outdoor scenic setting in Yangshuo County of Guilin City in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Zhang's idea, to perform a piece at a natural setting rather than in a theater, was inspired by the well-known musical film, " Third Sister Liu", featuring a legendary singer and the local culture and customs of ethnic groups in Guangxi......
