Heavy industry and military industry have always been the pillar industries of the Soviet Union and the foundation of the Soviet Union as a superpower. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia inherited most of the Soviet industry, but Ukraine and other allied republics also inherited a considerable portion. As a result, many of Russia's industries are no longer complete, and much of what could have been built is now hard to produce because of a lack of spare parts. For example, the carrier yard is in Ukraine, and now Russia has temporarily lost its carrier building capacity. Currently Russian consists of the following competitive industries: oil and gas, mining, processing precious stones and metals, aircraft building, aerospace production, weapons and military machinery manufacture, electric engineering, pulp-and-paper production, automotive industry, transport, road and agriculture machinery production, light and foodstuffs industries. High-tech industry plays an important role in Russia's national economy. Twenty percent of Russia's gross domestic product (GDP) is created by high-tech industries, which account for 15 percent of Russia's total exports, and about 1/3 of Russia's total employment in high-tech industries.
