A stomach virus has sidelined superstar pianist Lang Lang, so he will not be performing Saturday at Kleinhans Music Hall, according to an announcement released tonight by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.
The BPO has rescheduled his performance with the orchestra for an as-yet-undetermined date in July. All tickets for Saturday's canceled performance will be honored at that time.
At the same time, ticket-holders also can use their tickets for Saturday's 8 p.m. concert at which JoAnn Falletta will conduct the BPO with South Korean Joyce Yang -- critically acclaimed as "the most gifted young pianist of her generation." She will perform Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2.
Lang Lang's management at Columbia Artist Management released a statement saying the Chinese artist deeply regrets his inability to perform the concert this weekend with the BPO.
"He is resting and being provided with medication as to his doctor's recommendation," the statement said.
Daniel Hart, executive director of the BPO, said that while the orchestra is "terribly disappointed" that Lang Lang will be unable to perform Saturday night, it is pleased he will be back to play with the orchestra this summer.
Falletta expressed wishes for Lang Lang's full and speedy recovery and said the BPO looks forward to performing with him in July.
"We're happy to still be able to perform for those who were planning to come to the concert tomorrow," she said.
The orchestra did not say which pieces would be played at Saturday night's concert.
