Evanescence創始人是女主唱Amy Lee和吉他手Ben Moody。兩人初次相識是在幾年前的一次青年夏令營中，當時吉他手Ben Moody已小有名氣，而Amy Lee當時還只是一名普通的夏令營營員。在一次夏令營的集體娛樂活動中，Ben Moody第一次見到了Amy Lee。當時營員們都在一個大型的體育館中，Ben Moody正坐在地上看其他的營員在打籃球。而在體育館的另一側是一個放著鋼琴供營員們表演的一個小舞台。就在Ben Moody感到無聊之際，他忽然聽見有人在用鋼琴談奏Meatloaf的《I Would Do Anything For Love》，於是就向鋼琴望去，只見一個女孩在自如的演奏著自己創作的一些歌曲。Ben Moody被Amy Lee精湛的技藝和那天籟般的嗓音震撼了，在內心深處，Ben Moody已經認定：沒有比她更適合的搭檔了。不久之後，隨著兩人互相了解的逐步加深，Ben Moody和Amy Lee便開始用Evanescence這個名字錄製一些歌曲。如：《Give Unto Me》和《Understanding》。兩人的金屬風格也逐漸形成，這種風格在Goth Metal應該屬於Ethereal(仙樂)派。
