But you guys miss the most important point, Chinese and U.S. companies and products are not directly compete. Most of Chinese products are still low end and labor intensive. U.S. either buy from China or other developing country, the latter may cost U.S. much more.
But back then, some of Japanese companies and products are biggest and strongest competitor of U.S. companies. Toyota sold one more car, big three would see one less.
Make it simple, China and U.S. are not on the same level, but Japan are (or were). U.S. has been enjoying huge benefits from China's growth, like cheap products and free Chinese money. The job losses cost by Chinese import products are very minor.
