Eckhart Tolle's philosophy/idea of the "State" of "enlightenment" is the "I amness consciousness" or "That" which is aware of prior to the thought or any cognitive identification" is in fact coming from the basic idea of Advaita Vedanta. He refers this to a metaphysic "pure consciousness" which is a formless and eternal cosmic consciousness underlying all phenomena and existences - This idea has a similarity to the "zhenru" or alaya-vinnana" prescribed in the Mahayanic Tantric and Yogacara school and to the ultimate reality named "Brahman" in the Upanishad. His description on how he realized this "enlightenment" state is similar to a "dun wu" Zen experience, which by strict definition in Zen school of thought is just a preliminary stage toward a full enlightenment.
I just wanted to say, when you really read through the ancient Pali canon of early Buddhism and the Pali canon of Abhidhamma and Vishudimagga, The Buddha's "enlightenment" comes from a total understanding (by actual experience not by intellectual speculation) of the working of dependent-origination (paticasammupada) which gives rise to the endless cycle of samsara of existences or nama-rupa (materiality-mentality) and to all conceptions about "Self" that is rooted in tanha (craving/thirst) and avidja (ignorance/delusion). And from this total understanding arises the wisdom (panna) of seeing the three characteristics (suffering/dukha, impermanence/anicca and non-self/anatta) of nama-rupa that frees one from this samsara bondage. In parallel to this deep understanding, there is a full understanding and realization of a liberating unconditioned Dhamma (Nirvana/Nibbana). So, according to this teaching, attainment of enlightenment is a process of experiential knowing and seeing into the conventional reality (dependent-origination of nama-rupa) and ultimate reality (Nirvana/Nibbana). In short there is a complete clarity one needs to acquire about what is going on in the origination of this world and existence and how to attain the unformed Nibbana. This is not simply realizing one's reality is in the beingness or nowness or the present moment, or this present beingness is sprung from the untainted pure consciousness which has a subtlety of the conceptual self-recognition.
