Still, NDP Leader Jack Layton said government efforts to promote Canada are becoming increasingly bizarre.
「The more you learn, the more ridiculous it seems,」 Layton said. 「I don』t think you attract tourists with a fake lake or a big TV screen, I』m sorry. Canada has got more to offer than that.」
「The fact is that fake lake-gate is infuriating Canadians,」 he said.
The pretend lake has garnered headlines around the world—but not the kind the government was looking for:
· (CNN) –– Canada』s Cabinet ministers are in hot water for their government』s plans to spend nearly $2 million building a man-made lake for this month』s G20 summit.
· (AFP) — Canada』s Conservative government was castigated Monday for spending huge sums to host G8 and G20 summits at the end of June, including two million dollars on a fake lake inside the media center.
· (Business Week) — Canada』s Conservative government came under fire Monday for spending nearly $2 million on a simulation of the small town site of this month』s G-8 and G-20 summits complete with an artificial lake inside a temporary media center. The display, which cost $1.9-million Canadian ($1.8 million), is called The Experience Canada Corridor and will include canoes, trees, deck chairs and a fake dock.
Liberal MP Mark Holland said the journalists covering the summits will be writing about weighty issues such as world-wide debt and financial instability among other things.
「These aren』t travel journalists with the Lonely Planet. These are journalists coming in to cover world leaders and to talk about what world leaders are going to do cut out-of-control spending. Now you got this sitting around this lake with canoes in a bar. It』s totally out of control and it looks ridiculous. It』s now an international embarrassment,」 Holland told reporters.
「The world is laughing at this government,」he said. |
