化裝舞會前，太太忽不適，便叫丈夫單身赴會。稍後，太太自覺好了點，便換上一套丈夫從未見過的時裝，驅車也去參加舞會了。

　　剛進門，太太便看見丈夫與其他女人打情罵俏，不禁妒火中燒，決定試探一下丈夫。她走到丈夫身旁，嬌聲媚氣，投懷送抱。最後還引誘他到後花園去，盡情風流。

　　When the wife saw him, he was flirting with another girl.

　　到了午夜，當大家將要脫下面具時，太太才悄悄離去。而她丈夫直到凌晨三時才回來。

　　「舞會怎麼樣？」太太問。「一點也不好玩。」丈夫答。

　　第【3】串：to take French leave 悄悄離去

　　He took French leave without saying goodbye to everyone.

　　「你在那裡究竟幹了些什麼？」太太想努力弄清真相。

　　「老實告訴你吧，」丈夫道，「我到那裡時，見到幾個朋友都沒有帶妻子，於是我們幾個便在書房裡玩牌了。」

　　「你整個晚上都在打牌嗎？」太太尖叫道。

　　第【4】串：get to the bottom of sth. 弄清真相

　　「是的，不過我把自己的服裝與面具借給了另外一個老朋友。那傢伙在舞會結束時倒是向我炫耀，說這是他有生以來最美妙的一個晚上！」
