[表達]激動得說不出話來

片語To one』s surprise 常被人們用來表示「使某人驚訝的是…」，在新概念英語教程中就多次使用了這個片語。今天我們要學習另一個表達驚訝、驚喜、激動程度的片語：take someone』s breath away. 先看下面的例句：

　　When the man saw that girl for the first time, her beauty took his breath away.

　　(譯文：當這個男人第一次看到那個女孩時，她的美麗就讓她抑不住呼吸。)

　　片語take someone』s breath away從字面上看，其意義是「帶走了某人的呼吸」。如果人們的呼吸被帶走了，說明他們已經無法呼吸，說不出話來了，所以這個片語常用來表示「使某人非常驚訝，感動得說不出話來」。它使用非常廣泛，尤其用來表達當人們看到美麗的景色或漂亮的女孩時非常驚訝，心中充滿讚歎，因驚喜而說不出話來的情形。To take someone』s breath away means something is so extremely beautiful or exciting that people can』t say a word. For example:

　　After climbing the mountain, standing on the top of it, we felt that the view took our breath away.

　　breath最常見的意思是「呼吸」，由此「基本意思」也引申出了其他意義：生命、活力、期望等。在片語don』t hold one』s breath中，breath的意思就是「期望」，整個片語的意思是：別太殷切期望。如：

　　The boss might give you a promotion, but don』t hold your breath.

　　(譯文：老闆可能要提拔你，但別太殷切期望。)

　　hold one』s breath常用來指「短暫的屏住呼吸」，但在片語don』t hold one』s breath中，它的意思卻是「懷抱希望」，在前面加上否定形式don』t, 意思就是「別太抱希望、別太殷切期望」。這個片語在口語中尤其常見。The idiom is used to say that something is not going to happen soon. For example:

　　You don』t study hard, but you want to become a graduate student. Don』t hold your breath is the only word I can tell you.

　　(譯文：你學習不努力，卻想成為一名研究生。我只能說：不要抱太大希望。)
