The Google hacker who unearthed a trove of damning evidence about alleged age fakers in China's Olympic gymnastics team has forced the sport's world governing body to extend its investigations to include the Chinese team that competed in the 2000 Sydney Games.

Mike Walker, a security consultant with Washington DC-based Intrepidus Group, has teamed up with fellow blogger Heather Lawver, and posted an English subtitled excerpt of a June 2007 China Central Television (CCTV) documentary in which Yang Yun - a dual bronze medallist at the Sydney Olympics - refers to herself as being aged 14 at the time of the 2000 Games. Five Chinese female gymnasts who competed in Beijing last month - including He Kexin, who won two gold medals - are currently being investigated by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) over allegations that they were underaged.

Rules introduced in 1997 to prevent the exploitation of underaged gymnasts stipulate that competitors are required to be at least 16-years-old in the year the Olympics are held. While allegations about the Beijing gymnasts' ages were being canvassed in the US press in the lead-up to the Beijing Games, it was not until Walker - writing under the pseudonym Stryde Hax - published details of official documents indicating He Kexin was born on January 1, 1994 and therefore aged only 14. Walker fished the official documents out of the internet after executing a precision search known as a Google hack. Although some of those documents have since been removed from the servers on which they were hosted, copies of them have been preserved by Walker and his fellow band of citizen journalists.

On Monday, Walker and Lawver posted the subtitled video and a transcript, together with the names and email addresses of five senior office-bearers at the FIG, calling on readers to demand that the matter be dealt with properly in order to uphold the integrity of the Olympics. On Wednesday, Andre Gueisbuhler, the FIG secretary general, responded: "If we had a look at all the articles that came before, during and after the games, there were always rumours about the ages of China's athletes in Sydney,'' he told The Associated Press. "We did not have another choice. If we want to remain credible, then we have to look into things.'' When FIG spokesman Philippe Silacci was asked in an email last week if there had been any developments in the investigation, he responded: "No outcomes have been released so far. In case of new statement, info will be posted n the FIG website asap [sic]."

In the documentary, Yang Yun, who won an individual bronze medal on the uneven bars and a team bronze in the artistic gymnastics event, reveals her age at the time of the Sydney Olympics. "At that time, I was only 14-years-old," she tells the interviewer. "I thought, if I didn't do well this time, there is still a next time. I thought, 'there is still hope'." Yang, whose birth date is listed as December 2, 1984, succumbed to a series of wrist injuries after the 2000 Olympics. After failing to make the team selected for the Athens Olympics, she retired from the sport.

Dong Fangxiao, another member of the bronze medal-winning Chinese team in Sydney, is also being investigated. Dong's blog includes a reference to being born in 1985, meaning she would have only turned 15 in 2000. Her birth date is listed as January 20, 1983. Asked if there was any statute of limitations in cases involving eligibility, FIG vice-president Slava Corn said in an email that she had "no information on this topic and cannot respond to you at this time".

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has an eight year statute of limitation for doping offences. In a statement on her blog - heathershow.com - Lawver, a 23-year-old web activist and former amateur gymnast, describes herself and Walker as "average people who became involved in this [age falsification] debate online". "It's astounding that they [the FIG] have reacted. And we encourage them to face up to the facts," said Lawver in a telephone interview. "We wanted to show that people still really care and are interested to see a resolution to this case and that there are no double standards being applied."

Lawver is not stranger to this type of campaign. As a 16-year-old she led and international campaign against AOL Time Warner which issued "really nasty" legal threats against scores of Harry Potter fan websites set up by children. Walker, who said in a telephone interview last month that he had no previous interest in sport and no prior experience as a blogger, writes on his blog that his post about the documentary on Yang Yun will be his last one on the subject. "While the internet has made electronic identity easier to wipe out and easier to censor, it has also made the distribution of truth much harder to suppress," he writes, alluding to his first hand experience of seeing some of the official documents he discovered get summarily removed from the internet literally as he was watching.
