I fully agree with Mr. Chang and admire his article written with much wisdom free of emotional abusive words so often seen in the blogs here which will not produce positive result.
Western media and politicians have always been monopolising the global stage and speaking from "moral highground" that they forceably control. We Chinese feel they are products of PRIDE & PREJUDICE, but, whether we like it or not, they are winning mass support wordwide as demonstrated in the current Tibet issue. However hypocritical they may be, their trump cards are human rights, freedom of expression and one-man one-vote - exactly what we cannot afford to embrace at this labile stage of our national development. Beijing leadership have to tactfully let its people realise this.
In the scrutinising light of democracy, China is being relentlessly demonised by starkly unfair and untrue comments. Our Governmen must take bolder steps towards steady political reform while safeguarding national soverignty. Most intellectuals realise that complete freedom of speech and assembly is not in the best interest of the nation in the face of foreign interference and instigation, but we must put out favorable policies to the peasant masses and punish all corrupt officials to ensure social harmony. Diplomatically, we must strengthen ourselves in all aspects, so that western nations will depend on our cooperation and consequently will respect us. |
