City of Toronto owes its Tibetan citizens an apology
By Judi McLeod Sunday, March 30, 2008

The rally with flag-waving Chinese students hurling insults against Tibetans put a black mark on Toronto』s popular Dundas Square yesterday.

Touted as a gathering to promote 「anti-violence」, a throng of about 1,000 students chanted 「Dalai Lama die there」 to a small counter protest of Tibetan protesters who had gathered across the street.

The Tibetans were not only vastly outnumbered, they looked it.

Raucous and ear-splitting loud in nature, the protest attracted passersby and shoppers from the nearby Eaton Centre.

The students in the square seemed to have the support of carfuls of other students circling the square, waving flags and honking horns.

「No. No, this is not right,」 said an elderly Chinese woman standing beside me on the sidewalk in front of the square.

It was gratifying for me to know that some Torontonians did not approve what was going on in the square.

When I crossed the street, Tibetans told me they had decided on an impromptu counter protest after word leaked out that the protest would be mainly anti-Tibet. The prime reason for the Chinese rally, they said, was to incite hatred against Tibetans.

Their theory rings true when it is considered that the protest was advertised in the Chinese media as a rally to tell the 「truth」 about Tibet and 「safeguard」 the reunification of the motherland」.

Flag-waving, chanting Chinese students denounced Tibetans who they blamed for the recent turmoil in Tibet in which as many as 100 are said to have died.

Many of the passersby who stopped to watch, were from the nearby Chinese community and some were adversely impressed.

They seemed uneasy and hesitated crossing the street because of the cruising cars with flags held outside passenger windows.

「What do these kids know about life under the heel of a Communist regime?」 asked one man who had stopped to ask what was going on.

I was gratified to find out later that the event had been covered by The Epoch Times, whose story was posted on Internet giant, the Drudge Report.

「The rally became dramatic when a Tibetan refugee took to the stage waving a Tibetan flag. He was seized by a group of Chinese who dragged him away before police intervened to separate them.」 (The Epoch Times, March 29, 2008).

「After the incident, the man spoke with The Epoch Times. In tears, he described the suffering of Tibetans under communist rule, explaining that he left Tibet 10 years ago and came to Canada only recently. The man said Toronto Mayor David Miller should reconsider a planned trip to China next moth amid the ongoing repression in Tibet by the communist regime.

Between slurs, patriotic Chinese songs reverberated from the loudspeakers. Onlookers identified some of the songs coming from the square as Communist ones.
Angry Chinese students turned on the smaller Tibetan group, screaming, 「Dalai Lama lies!」 「Liars, liars」 and 「Leave Canada!」 「Leave Canada now!」

You could read anxiety on the faces of onlookers when a man, waving a huge Chinese flag suddenly charged across busy Yonge Street to where the Tibetans were protesting,

The Epoch Times said he was identified as University of Toronto student Yang Shao by other students in the square.

Police at 52 Division said the man had been released and no charges had been laid.

Dundas Square is a popular gathering place and features top entertainment throughout the year.

The City of Toronto oversees programming and events. Its own protocol rules include not permitting use of the square to those who would belittle any identifiable group with a rider that messages can only be communicated in a positive way.

Today』s event got the green light under the guise of a 「Love China Concert」.

Bureaucrats were not doing their job as even English-language flyers advertising the event pushed a distinctly anti-Tibetan theme.

As Toronto Mayor David Miller plans his China trip, world leaders are boycotting the Olympics in Beijing in protest to the Chinese government』s crackdown in Tibet.

Donald Tusk, Poland』s prime minister, became the first EU head of government to announce a boycott on Thursday and he was soon joined by President Vaclav Klaus of the Czech Republic, who will renege on plans to travel to Beijing.

German chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday became the first world leader to decide not to attend the Beijing Olympics.
EU leaders are preparing to discuss the crisis.

Meanwhile, the City of Toronto owes its Tibetan citizens a sincere apology for what was allowed to happen at Dundas Square today.

Apologize to the peaceful Chinese

Dear Editor:
Re: City of Toronto owes its Tibetan citizens an apology

I am utterly surprised to read the content of your news article on the Chinese rally that took place on March 29 at Dundas Square. Your article portrayed the Dundas Square gathering as if it is nothing but a hateful group demonstrating hate toward another ethinic group, which is so far from the truth. It is incredible that you call yourself an independent newsource and pride yourselves as responsible journallists who is different from the mainstream media. Sadly, your type of news reporting is irresposinble and heavily flawed with biased opinions.

Do you know why your article is so flawed? I will tell you why.

I was there at the Chinese gathering at the Dundas Square rally from beginning to end. I understood the Chinese language (Mandarin) being spoken. There was never ever any insult or hateful language used against the Tibetans. As a matter of fact, the Chinese gathered there at Dundas Square were there to emphasize on a peaceful gathering and to show how the media』s portrayal of Tibet story is unfair and biased. If we all demonstrate hateful language toward the Tibetans, why would a member of the organizers made a speech telling the Chinese group not to use any insult or assaulted language against any one? If we all hate the Tibetans like you claimed in your article, why would there be a performer demonstrating his love for the Tibetan culture by doing a Tibetan dance? Tell me your logic. That would not make any sense now if the Dundas Square Chinese group were really set out to incite hate.

To assume the entire group gathering was there to incite hate is nothing short of your own personal bias. I can tell you that through out the rally yesterday, not once did the Chinese side shout out hateful words about the Dala Lama or wish ill toward the Dala Lama. If you do not understand the Chinese language, do take some lessons before you make such a harsh judgment and manipulate the truth intent of the March 29 Dundas Square gathering.

You should apologize to all of those peaceful Chinese Canadians gathered yesterday for manipulating their peaceful rally into a hate campagain against Tibetans. Shame on you for your irresponsible news report! If you based on one incident in which a young man with a Chinese flag who ran toward the Tibetan crowd as hateful and aggresive and you lumped the entire group as hateful people. Then, your report totally missed the mark when you failed to report on the Tibetan dance and Chinese songs to celebrate the togetherness of China, one family made up of 56 ethnic groups.

My letter is in your hand. I will not be surprised that out of your biases, you would decide not to publish my letter.

Sincerely yours,
Leah Xing,

Nothing to apologize for!

Dear Editor:
Re: City of Toronto owes its Tibetan citizens an apology

Hello,

I would like to make a few comments regarding your website article.

I was at Saturday』s rally. Until now all we』ve heard is the Tibetan separatist message and the western media has so far been very willing repeat that message with little or no apparent verification. This was a truly a gross roots Chinese demonstration with permits and police presence paid for, the same however could not be said of the Tibetan gathering across the street.

The main point I would like to make; yesterday』s demonstration in support of China was attended by Chinese Canadians and Chinese of all ages. They were definitely not 「mostly students」 nor were they circled by honking cars of more 「students」 .

As far as I could tell from those I spoke with many are Canadian Citizens and have been living here for years. A large percentage looked like they could have easily been from Markham on their way back from grocery shopping outing at T&T. That evening I even saw a news item where the Tibetan spokesperson implied that 「the attendees may have been under some pressure from the Chinese government」. This is more than just being dishonest. The Chinese I spoke to were all there of their own accord and for their own reasons: primarily to show very heartfelt support for the integrity of China and to express their anger and feelings over the bias they perceive in western media reporting of the rioting in Lhasa.

As a caucasian native born Canadian I do not believe in separatism and I have been educating myself on the issue of Tibet. I attended Saturday』s rally for those same reasons.

Toronto and Chinese-Canadians have absolutely nothing to apologize for!

Dear Mr. Duffy and the CTV News Team:

During your recent interview with the Chinese Ambassador on March 24th on the issue of Tibet riot, you have mistakenly used the video clip which shows Nepal police force breaking up the Tibetan demonstrators. By doing that, you have mislead your audience into the false belief that the Chinese police were using excessive force against peaceful demonstrations.

From the very beginning, it was clear that the Tibet riot was criminal violence, and the Chinese government has every legal responsibility to maintain social order and bring criminals under justice.

Yet regrettably, the western media put their ignorance of facts and wrongful belief of Chinese society above principal of law, and the public in the west has been subjected to abundant rumors and false information.

The similar "mistakes" or tactics have been denounced by the Asian media and Chinese internet users. CNN was forced to give explanation on Mar 21 and the Germany RTL Television apologize on Mar 23.

So it is appalling that you continue to use this video clip on the Mar 24 interview. Whether it is a mistake or on purpose, it has done much damage to the integrity of your station, as well as the reputation of the Chinese government.

In any case, you owe an apology to your audience and the Chinese Ambassador.

    Sincerely,

    胡思亂想
