雜阿含經 - Agama sutra - could be the most ancient Buddhist Sutra that emphasizes on ceasation of suffering and awakening to "silence" or "nirvana". This is a very practical sutra, although the outset of it, compared with other sutras of the Mahayanic cannons, maybe a bit too "practical", repetitive, and less "philosophical". I think this direct teaching of Buddha is the most basic and essential message the Gautoma wants his students to understand and practice on it. I think it brings out the very essence of Dharma.

苦集滅道 and 八正道 are the basic Buddha's teaching. The original teaching of Gautama is very straight to the point -- be "mindful" about every moment arising in oyur body and your mind -- don't "judge" it -- "see who is the sufferer, who is the observer -- see how the body sensation/idea/thought/self arises and fades away -- this mindfulness training makes one aware of there is no "permanent actor/self" within the whole body and mind.. from which detachment and silence/clarity result. The clarity instantly draws one back to its original nature which is bliss and cessation of suffering.. I am fond of the very practical side of this dharma.
