My 12 yo daughter plans to do some math exercises during the spring break. Just before the break, her math teacher in the seventh grade told the students that if they do exercises at the back of the math book, they will receive extra points in the coming nine weeks. So my daughter devises the following plan, she will do the exercises first to earn money from parents, and then to get additional credits from her math teacher. What a smart way to shoot two birds with one stone.
It is important to train the kids young when they still have no independent thoughts. If they have developed some good habits before a certain age (or teenage), they are likely to keep on going without much prodding. However, once the kids pass the critical age, they will not take orders from anyone else easily.
To tell you the truth, my daughter loves making money. Yesterday, she negotiated with me about completing two after-school answer books on world-history and science for $5 each. I agreed and she would get them done by this Sunday.
We bought the middle and primary school text books of Beijing city (as I have relatives there), but I thought text books from other provinces are also good. If your relatives have time, they can go to the book shops and look for other types of math exercise books. Our kids do not know every words in Chinese, so we let them do those exercises that require no explanation first. Afterwards, the other questions become easier to explain. I hope this helps.
